What kind of day are you having?
Beautiful crystal-white snow is falling in Mississauga, Ontario. Behind the snow, clouds hang, and the temperature falls.
Reflections: Dr. Andrew Campbell (Dr. ABC) reminded us on a webinar last evening, January 15, 2025, that courageous conversations start at home for families and their children... talk about things that matter.
I often reach out to educate, transform and strengthen folks in my community, and someone sees my actions. I am so humbled when that person shows up for me.
I am sharing my award today from Nikki Clarke.

Youth Involvement in Gun Crimes:
An easy response is 'lock them in jail and let them rot.' I have heard this response many times.
There are many alternatives before your children become involved in crime, and if you have tried your best and this is the outcome, jail temporarily until treatment programs are available. There are different modalities to address risk factors, root causes, and the best approach to addressing change that is safe for the community. Many qualified professionals have the skills to work with adolescents.
Read, END, Incarceration of Black and Minority Youth. You will find preventative tools and solutions.

Youth with Mental Health Issues and the Youth Criminal Justice System:
Too often, young people enter the justice system in Canada not because they have all committed severe offences but rather that they have healthcare needs that are not addressed in their communities. Having a mental illness carries so much stigma that they use substances (drugs, alcohol and risky behaviours) to cope with the symptoms. Many have no access to a diagnosis, their behaviours worsen, and they are thrown in jail.
Young people should not have to be incarcerated to obtain a diagnosis of mental illness. This is unnecessary and counterproductive.
Please read my recently released book, END, Incarceration of Black and Minority Youth. It is a great toolkit for making changes.

Plagiarizing some of Pete Nojd's words about HOPE! Our voices must be heard while carefully considering the words we speak
Incarceration of young persons do not change delinquent behaviours. We must keep them in our community where they can receive the support they need to thrive. If you are in Toronto, on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 12 - 2 p.m., drop in at Regent Park to participate in this dynamic discussion and purchase a great tool kit to guide your advocacy "END, Incarceration of Black and Minority Youth.

Black History Month 2024: Let us continue to disseminate information to strengthen each other. Despite the best intentions of some of those working in the youth justice sector and the recommendations they received over the years to keep Black and Minority youth in their communities while delivering the services they need to strive, there are still large numbers of them being incarcerated. Their future remains uncertain, due to systemic, and cultural barriers, splintered mental health care and lack of consistent mechanisms.
