Herbs have been used by many cultures for their healing properties for centuries. Though herbs alone are not enough to fight off illness if paired with a diverse and nutritionally fulfilling diet and active lifestyle you can develop a more robust immune system.
These are a few you may want to stock your cupboards with this flu season.
02/18/2022
With restrictions easing up, it's important that we make sure our immune systems are working as well as they can be. You may still get sick, but why not do what you can to increase your odds of a quick recovery.
These lifestyle changes might seem impossible or hard at first, but amazing things rarely come easy.
Next week we'll talk about some herbs you might want to incorporate into your diet for an extra boost to your immune system.

It's getting colder out. It's time to break out those boots and oversize sweaters!!๐ฅถ
As we start to change up our wardrobe, it's important to remember that it's just as important to do the same with our diets. ๐ฝ
I follow the age-old Ayurvedic practise called Ritucharya- the principle of lifestyle adapted to seasons. As colder weather forces our metabolism to work harder to warm up the body, Ayurveda suggests we assist the process by eating "warming foods." But what is that?๐ฅ Simply put, foods that warm up the body. That doesn't necessarily refer to the temperature of food. It is food that boost metabolism, give comfort, and nourish. They also happen to be foods that are in season. ๐๐๐
Warming foods are vital for improving mood as well. The shorter days mean less daylight, which can cause seasonal depression. Undereating during this time will inevitably lead to irritability and binge eating. Eating hearty foods rich in complex carbohydrates and full of flavour daily is key!๐ฅฐ
Some warming foods/spices are
๐ฅGinger
๐ฅCloves
๐ฅCimmamon
๐ฅCardamom
๐ฅDried fruits (figs, dates, raisins)
๐ฅTurmeric
๐ฅGhee
๐ฅRoot vegetables
๐ฅCooked cruciferous veggies
๐ฅPeppers
๐ฅSoups
Don't forget to move your body as wellโa quick walk, skipping, yoga,...anything ๐ง๐ฟโโ๏ธ๐คธ๐ฝโโ๏ธ
Next we'll look at some easy ways to boost immunity this fall/winter.๐

When working with skin issues, clients are usually surprised to learn that taking vitamin C internally, is as essential or even more so than taking collagen.
We have all heard about the magic of various collagen powders. I myself supplement with collagen powder at least 3 times a week or more, depending on my diet. But what we don't hear about is that vitamin C actually-
๐๐พ
1)stabilizes the collagen molecule tertiary structure, and
2) also promotes collagen gene expression.
What does that mean? You need vitamin C to make collagen and to keep what collagen you have in its stable form.
Often we associate vitamin C with improving immunity, but it does much more than that, especially for the skin. Some of which are:
๐ Inhibiting overproduction of melanin. This is why it is used to treat melasma and hyperpigmentation
๐ Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize and remove oxidants, such as those found in environmental pollutants and after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This is why it is key to anti-ageing
๐ซ It boosts the production of new skin cells
But let's not forget topical application!
I believe everyone should be using vitamin C topically every day, especially if you are interested in anti-ageing and the prevention of hyperpigmentation.
It protects the skin from UV damage caused by prolonged sun exposure by reducing the amount of free radical formation. That's why it is a good idea to use a good vitamin C suspension underneath sunscreen every day! It adds an extra layer of protection against sun damage.
Do you use vitamin topically? What us your favourite product?

Yesterday we started our discussion on the skin, and how what we eat can have a huge impact on skin health. ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ
We know that having a healthy gut microbiome is step one to having the best skin you can have.
That means probiotics and fermented foods. Something I have talked about before. I've personally experienced a significant improvement in the quality of my skin after introducing fermented foods into my daily diet. My go-tos are kimchi, sauerkraut, and tempeh.
But what about foods to avoid? You could be doing everything else right, but by eating certain aggravating foods, you may find it hard to heal your skin.๐ค
There are some obvious one like sugar๐ซ, alcohol๐ท, and deep-fried foods๐ฉ๐.
Here are some other offenders:
๐๐ฝ Caffeine and sodas
๐๐ฝ Dairy
๐๐ฝ Refined grains
๐๐ฝ Bad/damaged fats
๐๐ฝ Processed foods
๐๐ฝ Non-organic soy products
Wanna know if these foods may be causing you to break out?
Simple. Eliminate the above for at least a week.
In its place:
1. Start your day with warm lemon water๐
2. Have at least 8 glasses of water a day๐ง
3. Include probiotics or fermented foods into your diet daily. ๐ฆ
4. Swap out caffeine with non-caffeinated herbal teas (dandelion root tea is a good option).โ
5. Include a glass of chlorophyll water every day๐ฟ
6. Try including raw veggies into your diet (aim for 2-3 cups of veggies a day)๐ฅ
7. Include at least 1 cup of high antioxidant foods every day (berries, broccoli, artichokes, avocados, leafy greens, beetroots etc)๐
After a week, you can start re-introducing foods that you have eliminated, one by one, to see how you feel.
That being said though the foods you should avoid are obviously less nutritious than, say a plate of veggies, that doesn't mean you have to avoid them altogether forever. It just means you might want to moderate your consumption of them. ๐ฝ
๐ธDon't forget to document your skin over the next week, while on your elimination diet, to observe any progress!
Have you ever realized that certain foods cause you to break out?
08/10/2021
๐I'm going to dive right into our skin talk with what I think is THE most important factor when it comes to skin health. I'll give you a hint.... it's also key in gut health....?
Your gut microbiome!!!!
Did you know that good bacteria not only aids in digestion but also in the health of your skin?๐ฆ
You could treat a breakout topically with expensive creams, ointments, serums, and facials. And it may work, but if you don't fix the root cause it's bound to happen again....and again...and again. ๐คฆ๐ฝโโ๏ธ
๐๐ฝโโ๏ธWhen you glow from the inside, it will show on the outside as well. Don't forget that skin is our largest organ and is interconnected with every other system in our body.
๐คบSkin is designed to be a natural barrier. Meaning it is meant to keep things out of our body- physical damage, pollution, toxins, chemicals, UV radiation. What that also means is that it is not well equipped to absorb nutrients that are applied topically. Instead, our skin must get the bulk of its nutrition from the foods we eat.
๐But if your gut health is poor (leaky gut, indigestion, low stomach acid etc), you can't be expected to be able to absorb the nutrients you need to nourish your skin.
I always tell my clients that skin complaints like; red rashes, acne, eczema, and dry skin is your body's way of trying to get your attention.โ It's trying to tell you something. The question is, are you willing to listen?
The wrong foods can disrupt your gut microbiome and compromise your overall health. Things like alcohol, caffeine, and sugar are the biggest offenders.
But it's not that easy. Food sensitivities, allergies, and other foods that may cause an immune response (different foods affect different people differently) can trigger inflammation in the body- the result of which may be seen directly on the skin.
But how do you figure out what you may be sensitive to? How do you know what to remove from your diet? Maybe it's time for a little reset?๐ค
Which is exactly what we'll be discussing tomorrow! ๐๐พ
