📢 Professional Engineering licensure update in Alberta!
APEGA has enhanced its Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) process for professional engineering licensure applicants. Effective July 18, 2026, the requirement for one year of Canadian engineering experience has been removed, allowing applicants with international experience to demonstrate equivalency to the Canadian engineering work environment directly through the CBA process. This equivalency is assessed using 8 mandatory competencies within APEGA's 22-competency framework:
• 1.1 – Regulations, Codes, and Standards
• 1.6 – Safety in Design and Technical Work
• 1.9 – Quality Assurance
• 2.1 – Oral Communication in English
• 2.2 – Written Communication in English
• 2.3 – Reading and Comprehension in English
• 5.1 – Professional Accountability
• 6.2 – Benefits of Engineering to the Public
Applicants must still demonstrate all 22 competencies required under APEGA's CBA framework. This update provides a more flexible pathway for applicants to demonstrate their readiness to practise within the Canadian engineering environment while maintaining the competency standards required for professional licensure.
