The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. At Millarville Community School, students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 support the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child as it strives to prepare stu

dents to be world citizens and lifelong learners. The curriculum is designed to meet the academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs of young students. Using the Alberta Education Program of Studies, curriculum is developed around six transdisciplinary themes that help teachers and students explore knowledge in the broadest sense of the word:
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organize ourselves
- Sharing the planet

At the heart of the PYP is a commitment to “structured inquiry” as a vehicle for learning. Through inquiry, concept-based questions are used to explore curricular themes and to help students to make significant connections.

What a great turn out to our Back to School Pancake Breakfast. It’s a lot of prep work for the first day, but worth every ounce of energy. Seeing the community come together is what makes MCS so special.
Big shout out to our Dads who control the grill and our school trustee Theresa Letendre for dishing out pancakes. This annual tradition wouldn’t happen without everyone stepping in with a helping hand.

Traditions are worth preserving. 🤍

For decades, this sign has welcomed students, families, and community members from the SW corner of the school, now overlooking our garden.
This spring, a few of our Grade 8 woodshop students gave it a little TLC. They carefully sanded the lettering and applied a fresh coat of paint to help it shine for years to come.

As many of you know, our school is celebrating its 75th birthday this fall. But did you know our community library, attached to the school, is also marking a major milestone? This year, it celebrates 50 years of serving our community.

Here’s to honouring the past, celebrating the present, and preserving the traditions that make our school and community so special.

On September 17th MCS is celebrating its 75th Birthday. If you are one of the lucky owners of a Grade 1. Quilt we’d love to display it during the celebration. Please drop off your quilt at the school office or the Community Library. Thanks!

For nearly 40 years, our Grade 1 quilt has stitched together memories, creativity, and community.

This cherished tradition began in 1988 when Mrs. Nita Foster wanted her grandson, Clint, to feel the warmth of home as he started Grade 1. What began as a gift of comfort has become a lasting legacy for generations of Millarville Community School students.

For many years Sheep Creek Weavers members Diane Bates and Cathy Scatterty have carried on the tradition. It starts with each Grade 1 student creating a unique quilt square. Then they are stitched together. The completed quilt becomes a treasured keepsake that follows the class through to Grade 8.

At the biannual Round Up (nee Gala) ‘retired’ quilts are auctioned off to the highest bidding alumni family.

It is a tradition woven with love, creativity, and the heart of Millarville Community School. 💚
