“Friends I Will Keep for Life”: My 5 Weeks in Guatemala
By: Jai K (Mackenzie ‘28)

Something that really stood out about my trip to Guatemala was being able to meet so many incredible people. I really enjoyed my time at Village School, and I feel as though I’ve made friends that I will keep for life. I met them through classes, sports, and even just walking around the halls. We have so much in common, and I am sure I will return to visit them.

I was also able to travel all over the country to visit beautiful places like El Paredón, Isla de Flores, Tikal, and Antigua. Every place left me in awe, and I learned so much about the culture from my host family and the locals. Personally, I also loved the food—my favourite dishes were jocón (a stew made with chicken, cilantro, and green peppers) and shukos (a street-food sandwich made with a hot dog, guacamole, cabbage, and a toasted bun).

I loved my time in Guatemala and wish I could have stayed longer, but I’m excited for the 2027 group of Brentonians who will have this opportunity next year!

‘Hope House’
By Lily Margaret Anderson-Oberlander (House Captain ‘26)

To my Home, my Sisters, my Hope, I can’t express how grateful I am to be your Captain, to claim some kind of credit for your explosive interhouse energy, our juniors’ flawless Airband performance, the bakery and dance floor you turn our kitchen into, and the giggles and monkey activities running through the hallwayS.

‘Ellis House’
By: William Lee (House Captain ‘26)

This year in Ellis House has been one to remember. As I reflect on my time since first stepping through the Ellis doors in November 2023, I am filled not only with joy, but with deep gratitude. Gratitude for the 65 housemates I now call brothers, for a place that has truly become a home away from home, for staff who feel like extended family, and most importantly, for a house culture grounded in love, laughter, and camaraderie.

'Allard House Captain'
By Kate Watt, Allard '26

Throughout the year, we learned that living together means becoming each other’s biggest supporters. The caring nature of our house shaped the friendships that will last long after graduation. Different backgrounds, personalities, and grades blended into one supportive community built on acceptance, strength and care.

Most importantly, our house became a place where everyone could belong. The memories we made through laughter in the halls and bathrooms, movie nights, Big-Little activities, borrowed clothes that somehow never get returned, and friendships formed in the most ordinary moments will stay with us forever. No matter where life takes us next, we will always carry a piece of this house and the people in it with us.

'Food for Thought: Volunteering at Nourish Cowichan'
By: Fiona C, Hope ‘26

Back in May, most students were focused on AP exams, final exams, or summer plans. But for a dedicated group of volunteers from the B-Well program, the focus consistently remains on a different kind of purpose: ensuring healthy meals to help children in our community.

Nourish Cowichan is a non-profit organization that devotes its time and efforts to supporting youth in the Cowichan Valley School District. Driven by a team of 70+ volunteers, board members, and donors, they are on a mission to provide equitable access to nutritious meals for students, fueling them to learn and succeed in their education. Rachelle S, Hope ‘27, reflects, “The energy of the staff members is always so high with energy and enthusiasm, it inspires us to contribute to helping them!”
