🚫🦟 With mostly sun in the forecast, our Parks and Recreation staff will be able to effectively carry out mosquito control efforts at key locations around the city this week. Locations include select stormwater ponds, wetlands, drainage areas, and other places with standing water.

Unfortunately, mosquito control isn’t as easy as yelling 🪄“Mosquitus Deletus”🪄 like it’s a wizarding spell in Harry Potter. But, our staff are skilled experts who are licensed and certified to use larvicides and other mosquito control practices. So, they’re as close to a wizard as we can get 🧙.

Here’s what goes into our mosquito control efforts, which run from Wednesday to Friday:

1️⃣ Mosquito larvae monitoring
Staff will monitor standing water bodies using the dip count method, a standard technique used to determine mosquito larvae levels. Results from monitoring will guide treatment decisions and ensure mosquito control applies only where larvae populations are at a level that requires control.

2️⃣ Treatment
When treatment is required, the City will apply VectoBac, a biological larvicide that specifically targets mosquito larvae before they develop into biting adults. The product is applied directly to water bodies containing mosquito larvae. VectoBac is a highly effective, low-risk, and environmentally compatible control product. It does not pose a risk to people, pets, or wildlife when used as directed. It typically takes effect and reduces larvae populations within 24 hours.

3️⃣ Follow-up monitoring (if needed)
Follow-up monitoring may be required at select locations to determine the effectiveness. This is typically done in areas with the highest levels recorded in the initial monitoring stage.

🙌 How can you help?
If you want to help in the effort to control mosquitoes around the city, you can eliminate sources of standing water around the yard including bird baths, buckets, tires, and other containers where mosquitoes can breed.

We appreciate the patience and support while we work to reduce the number of mosquitoes around Medicine Hat!
