One time attending a science centre in Calgary, they had a presentation on dinosaurs. The audience was primarily made up of kids and their parents.

At the end of the presentation, the speaker said something rather startling. He said that. “if the asteroid had not hit the earth dinosaurs would continue to evolve”. Then he proceeded to show a picture of what can be described as a “lizard man”. He concluded; “chances are we would look like this creature today”.

So, according to the speaker, if it wasn’t for a freak accident we would NOT look like or even be humans.

Recently, another paleontologist suggested that we would look like shrews because dinosaurs would prevent us from evolving into humans.

Thankfully, scripture sets the record straight in that we were created as human beings made in the image of God right from the beginning.

In Genesis Chapter 1 verses 26 & 27 it reads. "Then God said, ‘let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of all the air, over the livestock over all the earth and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them."

Land creatures like dinosaurs were created by God. “And God said, ‘let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds; livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind” (Genesis 1:24)
Thankfully we were created by a loving God and not a result of some wayward asteroid.

JIM LOVELL
Former astronaut Jim Lovell passed away at the age of 97. He was selected by NASA to become an astronaut in 1962. Lovell’s first two flights were with the Gemini program-learning how to live and work in space. However, Lovell’s most memorable flights were with the Apollo program. There, he flew on Apollo 8 and Apollo 13. Both flights saw an intervention from God.

APOLLO 8
Originally, Apollo 8 was slated to fly around the earth to continue testing the Command/Service Module along with the Lunar Module (the machine that would eventually land on the moon).
However, the Lunar Module was not ready to fly. During this time it was known to NASA that the Soviet Union was planning to send a manned Zond spacecraft to circle the moon which would beat the Americans in the Space Race. NASA management came up with a daring proposal to send Jim Lovell and his crew all the way to the moon; orbit it 10 times and return to earth. The next window to fly would be December 21, 1968

CHRISTMAS EVE
NASA realized that if Apollo 8 was successful, they would orbit the moon on Christmas Eve. They asked the crew to say something “appropriate.” Lovell’s crew was dumbfounded as to what to say.
Because of their heavy training schedule, Apollo 8 Commander, Frank Borman, handed the task to a newspaper friend. After spending long hours into the night trying to figure out what the crew should say, his wife came down to check on him. Knowing his plight she said “why not read from the book of Genesis”. It was brilliant; the crew would read the first ten verses of Genesis.

IN THE BEGINNING GOD…
On December 24, 1968, Apollo 8 successfully maneuvered the spacecraft into lunar orbit. On the last go-a-around the crew said to an audience of close to a billion people “that they had a message”. At that time each crew member read their selected verses. Lovell read Genesis chapter 1 verses 6 to 8. The reading caught the NASA officials and Mission Control off-guard. Some began to cry at the beauty of the reading. One cannot help but think that at the height of man’s technological achievement and the tension of the Cold War, God stole the show with the reading of Genesis. The timing of this event was impeccable and certainly God ordained.

APOLLO 13
After Apollo 8, Jim Lovell was next selected to command the Apollo 14 mission, however NASA felt that the crew of Apollo 13 needed more training and gave the Apollo 13 flight to a more experience Jim Lovell. This flight was to take Lovell and fellow astronaut Fred Haise to the Fra Mauro Mountains on the moon. . This mission was fright with mishaps. First, Lovell’s other crew member Ken Mattingly was exposed to the measles and had to be replaced at the last minute by Jack Swigert. Second, the flight launched at 13:13 Houston time - during lift-off the center engine of the Saturn V rocket shut down too early, making the four remaining engines lumber longer to get into orbit.

“HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM”
The ultimate mishap happened on April 13, 1970, when the oxygen tanks of Apollo 13 exploded on the Service Module. Jim Lovell’s famous words “Houston we have a problem”, crackled through the radio some 200,000 miles away from the earth. The stranded crew had to use the Lunar Module as a lifeboat to help get back to earth.

ANSWERED PRAYERS
Mission Controller, Jerry Woodfill, was monitoring the spacecraft’s warning system back in Houston. Woodfill said, “Though I was not a believer, the people from Houston Control and around the world launched prayers heavenward. They even stopped a Cubs baseball game to pray.”
Woodfill saw technical miracles unfold the next four days which convinced him that God was, indeed, real, that He answers prayer, and was guiding the rescue of the Apollo 13 crew. Every time Mission Control made a decision as to the best way to get the crew back safely, they made the right decision. To this Jerry thought, “…There is someone beyond Houston assisting here.” Eighteen months later, Jerry received Christ as his Lord and Savior.

CONCLUSION:
Apart from the first moon landing with Apollo 11, Jim Lovell experienced two memorable historical missions. These Missions showed an obvious intervention from God,…one with the Genesis reading of Apollo 8 and two, the safe return of the Apollo 13.
