Are you being too soft with your horse? Or do you need to be firmer?

It's a question I hear from horse owners all the time.

We often think stronger leadership means being more assertive, applying more pressure, or becoming firmer with our expectations.

But what if the answer isn't about being stronger at all?

What if it's about becoming clearer?

I've learned that leadership isn't something we create through force. It's something our horses begin to recognize through our presence, awareness, feel, and timing.

And as those qualities improve, we often discover that we need less pressure, not more.

We often talk about wanting our horse to be calmer, softer, or more responsive.

But leadership asks us to look at our side of the relationship too.

Can I stay clear when my horse is uncertain?

Can I adjust my timing instead of simply adding more pressure?

Can I give my horse enough room to think without taking over?

Good leadership isn’t about having control over every moment.

It’s about developing the awareness, feel, and timing to help our horse find their way through it.

Sometimes the biggest shift in our horse begins with a change in us.

A confident horse isn’t built by removing pressure. It’s built by helping them understand how to work through it.

This October, we’re focusing on Building Understanding & Confidence through the early stages of working with a young horse.

We’ll look at how I introduce pressure, the difference between lightness and softness, and how we can give the horse room to think, search, and find the answer.

From early halter work to introducing the surcingle and tarp, the goal isn’t simply to have the horse tolerate something new. It’s to help them understand how to work through uncertainty while staying connected.

We’ll also have a Live Q&A with a special guest this month, more details coming soon!

When something isn’t working with our horse, it’s easy to think we need to do more.

More pressure.
A stronger correction.
A clearer consequence.

But sometimes the horse isn’t refusing to listen.

Sometimes they simply don’t understand.

And if the answer to uncertainty is always more pressure, we can unintentionally teach the horse to respond to the pressure rather than understand what we’re asking.

Good horsemanship asks us to notice the difference.

Does my horse need more pressure right now or do they need more clarity?

Those two things can look very different.

And learning to recognize the difference can change the entire conversation between you and your horse.
