🧡 Truth & Reconciliation Week at Gateway Middle School 🧡
Last week, our Gateway students took time to learn, reflect, and acknowledge the importance of Truth and Reconciliation.
On September 30, our students joined the community at Elk’s Park to participate in activities honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and learning more about the experiences and history of Indigenous peoples.
We were also honoured to have Lynal Ernest join us and lead our school, along with the Grade 8 students from Kopahawakenum, in a round dance and discussion about the importance of honouring the past, learning the truth, and building respectful relationships moving forward.
Throughout the week, students also reflected on the meaning behind the empty desk in our Commons Area. The desk represents the children who were taken from their families and communities and sent to residential schools, including those who never returned home. Our students were encouraged to think about how we can honour those children and survivors through the actions we choose today.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this week meaningful for our students. 🧡
