"Glen of the River Garry"

The name is Scottish Gaelic — Gleann Garadh — from gleann, "glen or valley," and Garadh, the name of the river that runs through it in Inverness-shire. The Scottish Glen Garry was the homeland of the MacDonells of Glengarry, one of the great Highland kindreds.

This Glengarry, though, lies in the far eastern corner of Ontario, between the Ottawa and St Lawrence rivers — rolling farm country of sugar maples and fieldstone walls, not mountains. It was founded in 1784 by Highland Loyalists, chiefly MacDonells, and filled through the decades that followed by emigrants driven out of Glengarry and Knoydart by the clearances. They named their new county for the glen that had cast them out. Canadian Gaelic was the everyday tongue here for generations, spoken in the fields and the country kirks long after it faded elsewhere.

At Maxville, in the heart of the county, they still hold the Glengarry Highland Games — one of the largest gatherings of the Highland world anywhere. The pipes, the heavy stones, the massed bands and the old songs: a Scottish valley remembered on Canadian ground by the descendants of the very people who refused to let its name die.

They lost the glen. They kept its name — and gave it to their children's country. 🍁

Lots of history on the many, many talented Glengarry musicians as well as a Piper’s Room with history on the pipe bands of Glengarry and The Glengarry School of Piping and Drumming.🎶
