The mandatory online course requirement for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) officially began with students who entered Grade 9 in the 2020–2021 school year. These students are required to successfully complete two online learning credits in order to graduate.
In my opinion, this is not a good policy.
Online learning should be an option for mature, self-driven students — not a mandatory requirement for the majority of teenagers, especially those who are still developing self-control, learning habits, discipline, and independence.
As a front-line educator, I have seen too many cases where online high school credit courses do not truly achieve the purpose of learning. Many students complete the course, but they do not build the necessary academic foundation, study skills, or critical thinking skills. With the growing reliance on AI, this problem has become even more serious.
I strongly believe that university admission officers should carefully review online high school credits, especially in core and challenging subjects such as Math, English, and Science. These courses often do not prepare students well for university-level expectations. Some students may receive inflated marks, but later struggle in university because they were not properly trained.
Even worse, inflated online course marks can take opportunities away from genuinely hardworking students who completed rigorous in-person courses and developed real academic ability.
This is not fair, and it needs to be corrected.
Online learning can be valuable for curious, mature, and highly self-motivated students. However, it should not be treated as the best learning model for most teenagers.
Education should not only be about earning credits. It should be about building real knowledge, discipline, learning skills, and long-term readiness for the future.
