At Upper Canada Child Care, we love exploring through play—including messy play!

While activities like playdough and finger painting can be exciting ways for children to discover through touch, every child (and caregiver) has their own preferences when it comes to sensory experiences.

Sensory play can take many forms, from listening and observing to moving, creating, and exploring the world around them.

Whether your child loves getting messy or prefers a mess-free approach, there are many ways to encourage curiosity, confidence, and learning through play.

Swipe through for some fun and mess-free sensory play ideas to try at home!

Starting school is a big milestone—for children and families alike.

While academic readiness is often a focus, social skills play an equally important role in helping children feel confident, connected, and ready to learn.

These everyday skills support children in building relationships, navigating group environments, and developing a sense of independence.

Each child develops at their own pace, and these skills grow over time with guidance, practice, and encouragement.

At Upper Canada Child Care, we support children in building these foundational skills through everyday interactions, play, and meaningful learning experiences.

When children say “I’m bored,” they are often in an important developmental space.

They are experiencing a gap between wanting stimulation but not knowing how to create it for themselves. While it may sound like a complaint or a call to action, resisting the urge to intervene, might be the best thing that adults can do.

So what can we do instead?

Swipe to explore practical ways to support children move through the discomfort of boredom in a healthy, developmentally supportive way.

Today is International Self-Care Day.

At Upper Canada Child Care, we recognize that family life can be full, fast-paced, and deeply meaningful and in the middle of it all, caregivers often forget to pause for themselves.

Self-care doesn’t need to be big or time-consuming. It can be found in small, everyday moments that help you reset, breathe, and reconnect with yourself.
These micro self-care ideas are simple ways to bring a little more calm into your day; no pressure, just possibilities.

Because when caregivers feel supported and grounded, children feel it too.

Mixed-age play is a topic we’re often asked about by families.

A common question is how children are supported when interacting with peers of different ages. At UCCC, the focus is always on creating a structured, well-supervised environment where expectations are clear and educators are actively engaged.

In these settings, children benefit from shared experiences. Younger children learn through observation and participation, while older children develop important social skills such as empathy, patience, and leadership.

With the right guidance and support, mixed-age play becomes a meaningful opportunity for children to build confidence, develop social skills, and learn from one another in a positive and inclusive environment.

Swipe through to learn more about the benefits of mixed-age play.
