This past week, our beloved Mr. Virgo put on a fantastic album release party at Harmony Hall. Derek’s album, Left in the Dark, tells the inspiring story of overcoming life changing adversity. Derek is an inspiration to the entire BCSS community!

Special thanks to BCSS Alumni and for coming out and helping to capture this amazing event!

While riding a bicycle in March of 2022, Derek was struck from behind by a vehicle that fled the scene, leaving him for dead. He sustained life changing injuries, including a spinal cord injury, several fractured vertebrae, a traumatic brain injury and many other fractures.

After being treated at a Toronto-area trauma centre, he began to embrace the healing forces of music and immediately recognized the power it held as a visualization aid, motivator for rehabilitation, and as an outlet for creative expression.

A message from the 2023-2024 Valedictorian, Anouk Sabbatasso Sola:

“Seniors!! It feels like yesterday we were struggling to to turn cameras on in google meets and now graduation is just a week away. No more drives to lunch, smiles in the halls, blue table convos, or visits to your favourite teacher 🥲. I know we all experienced high school differently, but what every single one of us has in common over the past 4 years is growth. I’ve loved growing alongside you all and sharing our last 4 years of being kids. Now, a new chapter is beginning and it’s completely up to you how you want to lead it. Remember to love yours, love others, work hard for what you want and everything will be alright. See you at graduation”✌️

A fresh face, Michael has been part of the Bill Crothers community since 2021. He finds joy in skateboarding, comic books, and playing retro video games. Little known fact: Michael is a hobby collector of antique televisions!

For Michael the allure of Bill Crothers goes beyond its physical walls. He takes pride in keeping our fields free of litter in the fall, our driveways and walkways clear of snow in the winter, and our trees and greenery manicured in the spring. He says that welcoming teachers and an active student population make for a positive working environment.

Thank You Ayaz

Ayaz joined the Bill Crothers community in August 2013. Born in a small village 200km north of Bombay, India, Ayaz’s family immigrated to Canada in the early 70’s. His father was a teacher and his mother a dedicated homemaker. Together, they nurtured a tight knit family household, a way of life Ayaz has continued with his wife of 30 years, his two sons and daughter.

At Bill Crothers, Ayaz finds satisfaction in the varied interactions with teachers, students, and coworkers. While maintaining a large and busy building like Bill Crothers is no small feat, the ever-changing nature of each day keeps him engaged and appreciative of the unique culture at BCSS.

If you see Ayaz in the hallways, take a moment and say “Thank You”

Principal Meshell Lynch-James: Pioneering a Path in Education through Representation

In celebration of Women’s History Month, this past week our much loved principal, Meshell Lynch-James, was a featured guest on the board’s signature podcast, Tune In YRDSB.

Her family’s journey started in the Caribbean and traversed through England before settling in Canada. Despite an anticipated career trajectory toward the legal profession, her path took a transformative shift amid her bar exam preparations. She found a profound sense of purpose in the sphere of education much to the initial reservation of her father.

Principal Lynch-James was intrinsically drawn to the teaching environment, and having “stood on many shoulders” was propelled by an earnest desire to give back to the communities she served. Because of her upbringing, she learned early on about the transformative significance of representation in the educational landscape. Representation amplifies the collective narrative, fostering an inclusive environment resonating with each student's identity.

Principal Lynch-James recognizes the paramount role of schools as the initial nexus for embracing diversity and upholds the significance of seeing oneself reflected across the various echelons of the educational system. A self-styled "change maker" and "activator," she is dedicated to guiding her students and teachers in the exploration and realization of their unique gifts.
