Save the date! The Autumn Leaves Studio Tour is coming up at the start of October and I’m starting to get myself organized to make new work for that! I’ll be joining 14 other studios for our annual tour where you can visit the artists, shop for beautiful art and fine craft and watch demos (I’ll be doing live glassblowing all weekend long!). It’s coming up fast, one of my most anticipated sales of the year… the annual Seconds Sale here at Infinite Glassworks.

This year, the sale’s bigger than ever — I’ve invited fellow artists and makers who don’t run their own sales. Alongside handblown glass seconds, you’ll find pottery, jewellery, paintings, ironwork, and more. It’s your chance to score unique seconds, ends of lines, and older works at fantastic prices.

📆 Date:  Friday August 21 + Saturday August 22

⏱️ Time:  10 am – 3 pm  NO EARLYBIRDS PLEASE!

📍 Location:  Infinite Glassworks, 560167 Sideroad 70, Markdale.  Park on the road as the laneway will be filled with tables of glass.

🌤️ Weather:  This is an outdoor sale.  Rain or shine, the sale goes on!

💰 Payment:  Cash, e-transfer, or debit only. Credit cards not accepted.

🛍️ Bags:  We encourage you to bring your own reusable bags/boxes to transport your purchases home.

Not sure what a “second” is? Our seconds have small quirks and imperfections in shape, colour, or design, but they’re fully functional and brimming with charm.

Our show Eastern Whisperssss is on until July 25th at Deep Water Gallery . The gallery hours are Thursday - Saturday from 11am-4pm or by appointment. If you haven’t seen the show yet, hope you can make it out at see some nautical nonsense.

Some pieces have been sold, but there are plenty still available such as this wacky bluetooth speaker inspired by the wild house colours of the east coast.

Summer maintenance is well underway over here! This year it’s a big maintenance task on my glassblowing furnace: replacing the crucible. The crucible is the bowl made of refractory ceramic which holds the molten glass inside my furnace. Over time, the molten glass eats away at the crucible and as it erodes little chunks of the ceramic fall into the glass.

One of the main reasons I bought this type of furnace in the first place was because it’s a relatively easy thing to replace because of the way the furnace is designed. The burner train and safety system get removed, then the top half of the furnace gets lifted off, exposing the crucible inside. Remove the old crucible, replace it with new, and put it all back together! I have been seriously fortunate that there has been very little damage to fix considering I’ve been running this furnace since 2016.

This process takes about a week so hoping to be back up and running after this heat wave is over!

It’s been a little over a week since our show opened at Deep Water Gallery in Wiarton and my heart is still feeling so full of love and gratitude for all the people who showed up to the opening. It was a very busy event and it was really lovely to see so many friends, family and strangers enjoy and interact with all the art.

Elisabeth Heathfield curated and hung the show so spectacularly, and I would be remiss in not mentioning the gallery board and the supportive arts community in beautiful Wiarton.

becky comber and Katharine Kennie and I have done a bunch of projects together over the years and this one was definitely one of my favourites!

If you missed the opening, the show is up until July 25th at Deep Water Gallery. If you’d like to purchase a piece please reach out and I’ll send you the price list and the companion booklet to learn more. Some pieces have sold but there’s still some beauties left!

Worn, weathered fishing sheds were super abundant along the shore road in Westport but none were as thrilling as that of Captain Roy Albert Graham MB.  I was so charmed by all the buoys clumped on his landing and started affectionately calling the building Roy’s Buoys.

I found the front staircase inexplicably alluring, possibly because it wasn’t something I saw on other nearby fishing sheds. I honestly don’t even know why I was so into it.  I loved all the coils of rope and buoys piled everywhere.  I do believe that Captain Roy is no longer with us but his sons have carried on the business.

Roy’s Buoys is the centrepiece of my collection.  It stands 50” tall and I spent weeks working on it, cutting out all the individual slices of plywood on the CNC before stacking, gluing and sanding, sanding, sanding.  I am still tasting plywood dust 🙃.  It’s the biggest piece I have made as an artist and it really pushed me into what I could accomplish with the tools I have available to me at Grey Bruce Makers .  

Members at the Maker’s Space I was making it at were confused… is it a birdhouse?  a squirrel house? a cat bed?  It was so fun hearing what people thought it might be as I was midway through making it.

Here’s a silly story about being tricked by a faux duplex (and some photos of the piece it inspired)!

While walking through Westport on Brier Island, I kept returning to a house with striking architecture that backed onto one of the main residential streets. From the street, I assumed I was seeing the front, and I photographed it several times.

Days later, while photographing what I thought was a completely different house, I realized I had been looking at the same building all along. At the time, because of its symmetry, I read it as a duplex, and it became the inspiration for The Duplex.

It wasn’t until months later—after making the piece and looking back through the images in detail—that I realized it appears to be a single dwelling after all. So The Duplex was, in fact, inspired by a singlex: a faux duplex!

At the time, I also found a weathered length of rope nearbywith two pieces spliced together. I was drawn to the idea of two elements made stronger through connection, and it became tied to my interpretation of what I thought was a duplex, and the idea of neighbours being stronger together in a community. In hindsight, while the original reading turned out to be incorrect, the idea of connection still holds.
