Tips for learning songs by ear!

Before learning a song, you’ll want to:

⭐️ Familiarize yourself with the major key centers and the chords within them (In the key of C major thats C Maj, D Min, E Min, F maj, G Maj, A Min & B half dim) Plus once you learn the major scale shape, in the case of guitar and bass, every major scale is the same shape even for different keys! (c major, f major, g major etc) so don't worry about having to learn a new scale shape for each key centre.

⭐️ Familiarize yourself with chord progressions until you can recognize them (example chord progressions to practice in graphic)

To start learning songs, you’ll need to:

🎶 Listen to the song and get it stuck in your head

🎵 Figure out the key centre, a lot of popular songs are in major keys

🎼 Use your knowledge of chord progressions and try your best to listen to the movement of the progression and see if you recognize anything, even if that doesn't work, start with the first chord in the key and go from there trying different chords until it fits.

It’s been awhile but I’m happy to announce, I am now accepting students for 2022/2023!

If you don’t already know me, my name is Josh.

I am a musician, Jazz bassist, composer, and student teacher.

Currently I am offering bass, piano & guitar (to an intermediate level) lessons at a discounted rate. I have a background mainly rooted in Jazz, Rock & Indie/New Wave music styles. I have devoted much of my time to studying music, not only in relation to theory and the functional aspects but as an art and how music is used to tell stories and express emotions.

I have a wide variety of knowledge covering the rudiments of Jazz music theory all the way to more advanced theoretical concepts as well as knowledge of technique, some recording and production skills, improvising, reading + writing charts, learning songs by ear and more!

I have also spent much of my time learning by rote teaching styles, more rigid demanding teaching styles encompassing music theory, sight reading and improvising. In my own teaching I use a mixture of both teaching styles depending on my student and their goals and what works best for them.
