Moose look like they were built for snow and timber, not water, but they’re shockingly good swimmers and divers. They can swim for miles and routinely dive 20 feet deep, walking and kicking along the bottom of lakes and rivers to eat aquatic plants like pondweed and water lilies. Those plants are packed with sodium and minerals they don’t get on land, so moose will drop their huge heads underwater, close their nostrils, and calmly feed off the bottom. What most people don’t realize is they can stay under over a minute at a time, coming up, taking a breath, and going right back down. Watching a 1,200-pound animal disappear beneath the surface of a lake to graze is one of the strangest, and coolest, things in the wild.

💬 Would you expect an animal this big to be such a strong swimmer?
