On 27 September 1987, 21 monks from Drepung Monastery staged a peaceful demonstration in Lhasa, marking the beginning of a series of protests in Tibet that continued over the following years.

The monks walked from Drepung Monastery to central Lhasa and gathered around the Barkhor. Carrying a hand-drawn Tibetan national flag, they called for Tibetan independence and expressed their support for His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, chanting slogans including “Tibet is Independent” and “May the Dalai Lama Live Ten Thousand Years.” They were gradually joined by local Tibetans.

Chinese authorities subsequently broke up the demonstration and arrested the 21 monks along with five lay Tibetans. The first day’s protest ended without violence, although the arrests marked the beginning of a wider period of demonstrations, arrests and unrest in Lhasa.

On 28 September, two foreign nationals in Lhasa were reportedly arrested after Tibetan flags were found on their bags. Four days later, on 1 October, another demonstration in Lhasa escalated into violent clashes, during which Tibetans were killed and many others were arrested. Further protests and arrests followed in the months and years that followed.
