If you’ve spent any time on our campus, you’ve probably met Zara and Olive.

These two sisters have made themselves very much at home on our campus. You’ll often find them wandering the grounds, greeting students and families, supervising outdoor activities, or stretched out in a sunny spot having a very well-earned nap.

The children know them well, and Zara and Olive have become part of the everyday rhythm of school life. There’s something pretty special about arriving at school and being greeted by a cat on your way to class!

This year, we’ve started a Campus Cat Sponsorship Program for families who’d like to help keep our two furry residents fed, healthy, and happily roaming the grounds. If you’d like to sponsor Zara and Olive for a month, M. Trish can help you sign up.

With children constantly growing, winter gear often has plenty of life left in it long after it’s been outgrown.

Our annual Winter Gear Swap is a simple way for our community to pass along what is no longer needed and help another family get ready for the colder months ahead.

Families are invited to bring in clean, gently used winter gear like coats, snow pants, boots, mittens, gloves, toques, and more. Then, on October 8, everything will be laid out for families to find what their children need for the season ahead.

It’s practical, it keeps good clothing in use, and it’s one more way our families can support one another. Outgrown it? Pass it along. Need it? Take it home.

Did you know Waldorf students are introduced to all four math processes in Grade One?

Through story, movement, rhythm, and hands-on learning, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division come to life, helping children see mathematics as connected, meaningful, and full of possibility.

Discover why we teach math this way at Okanagan Waldorf School:

One of the things that makes a small school community special is that we all have a hand in caring for the place our children spend their days.

Our campus is where children learn, play, explore, build, garden, wander and grow. And over the years, so many families and staff members have given their time and energy to caring for it.

Our Fall Campus Clean-Up is another chance to come together, tackle some seasonal jobs, and get the grounds ready for the colder months ahead. Children are welcome to join their parents too, giving them a chance to see what it looks like when a community pitches in and cares for something together.

A heartfelt thank you to all the families and staff who have rolled up their sleeves over the years, and to those who continue to show up. So much of what makes our campus the beautiful place it is has been made possible by many hands, over many years.

Our Fall campus clean-up work party is on Friday, October 2. Drop in anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. See you there!

Giving back while gaining valuable life skills!

Our Grade 6/7/8 students recently spent a morning volunteering at Gleaners, where they worked together to prepare food for people in need. In just one morning, each student produced enough food to provide approximately 2,000 meals, which will have an incredible impact!

Our students have a long history of volunteering with Gleaners and are always welcomed with gratitude for their respectful attitudes, strong work ethic, and willingness to help. We are proud to see them contribute meaningfully to the wider community while learning the importance of service, teamwork, and compassion.

A new school year begins with beauty, imagination and intention. M. Price, our Class 2/3 teacher, created this stunning chalkboard art to welcome students into the classroom and bring their lessons to life.

These beautiful drawings are more than decoration; they invite curiosity, inspire wonder and offer a glimpse of the stories and learning waiting to unfold. We are so grateful for the creativity and care our teachers bring to every new beginning.

This morning at recess, a deer and her two fawns walked past the playground to eat the fallen crab apples. This deer has been frequenting the tree often and is not spooked by anyone walking by. Today was the first day she brought her fawns (or maybe it was one of her herd mates with her fawns??). It was a wonderful experience for the students who took a moment from play to watch them. It wasn't until a group from the Marigold Room came out right beside them that the fawns were spooked, and they took a path straight through the playground and into the forest.

News from the Cooperative Garden

The garden is thriving! Seventeen families have joined us this year, helping to grow and harvest snap peas, kale, carrots, garlic, and more. Our Early Years children have also enjoyed visiting the garden, tasting fresh vegetables, and gathering flowers for their classrooms.

New this year is our flower stand beside the pumphouse on Whitevale Road. Small bouquets are $10, and larger bouquets in jars are $15. All proceeds help purchase seeds, tools, hoses, and other garden supplies.

Everyone is welcome to join a work party:

Tuesdays, 6:00–8:00 pm
Sundays, 9:00–11:00 am

Together, we’re growing nourishing food and a strong community.

Our campus was full of life this summer, with children exploring nature, creating art, learning new skills, and building friendships through our Early Years programs and three summer camps.

Thank you to our wonderful educators, camp leaders, assistants, and families for making this summer such a joyful and memorable one.

In a world of keyboards, touchscreens, and voice-to-text, does cursive writing still matter?

At Okanagan Waldorf School, the journey toward cursive begins with form drawing. Through flowing lines, curves, loops, and symmetrical patterns, children develop the coordination, concentration, and pencil control needed for fluent handwriting.

Cursive is about more than forming beautiful letters. It can support writing fluency, memory, word recognition, patience, and focused attention, all while giving children a handwriting style that is uniquely their own.

In our latest 'Ever Wonder Why…?' post, we explore how form drawing prepares children for cursive and why handwriting continues to have an important place in education.
