Today the children created their own bird nests using all natural materials. Twigs, grass, and leaves were carefully gathered and thoughtfully arranged as they worked. Small hands stayed busy, focused, and proud of what they were building together.

We talked about how birds build their nests to keep their eggs safe and warm. The children learned that nests are carefully made homes, designed to protect and support new life. These conversations helped them understand how animals care for their young and why safety and shelter matter.

This activity supported fine motor skills, creativity, and early science learning in a calm and purposeful way. Most importantly, it encouraged empathy as we discussed how birds gently care for their babies once they hatch.

For the next few weeks, the children will be exploring all things bird on our nature table. Each week will gently build on the last, allowing the children to deepen their understanding through hands-on experiences and steady routines.

During week one, we will focus on naming the birds presented. The children will observe pictures and small figures, practice identifying features, and build new vocabulary through calm, guided conversation. Taking time to notice details supports language development and careful observation.

In week two, the children will explore building a bird’s nest using natural materials. This activity encourages creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor development while helping them understand how birds create safe spaces for their eggs.

Week three will introduce building a simple bird feeder, followed by week four where we will create a small water bowl for birds. These projects help the children connect learning to real-world care and responsibility, reinforcing the importance of nurturing living things

Happy birthday to Thomas Edison!

Born February 11, 1847, Edison was a big fan of the Montessori method, saying it "makes learning a pleasure. It follows the natural instincts of the human being."

In our Montessori preschool classroom, botany and zoology support children’s natural curiosity about the living world. Learning happens through calm, hands-on experiences that feel purposeful and engaging.

Children care for plants, observe growth, and learn about animals and their environments in simple, respectful ways. These activities build responsibility, patience, and early scientific understanding.

All lessons are thoughtfully woven into daily routines, creating a peaceful space where children feel secure, supported, and free to explore at their own pace.
