Helping children navigate the digital world is not always easy, but parents do not have to do it alone.

EPCA is proud to have collaborated with the creation of Navigating the Digital World: A Handbook for Families, a practical, research based guide developed with experts at McGill University. This resource helps families better understand online risks, address cyberbullying, and build positive and respectful digital habits together.

With tips, real life examples, and tools for both parents and youth, this guide empowers families to approach the digital world with confidence, safety, and kindness.

EPCA is concerned by the decision to reduce parent participation on the committee responsible for appointing regional student ombudsmen.

The change adopted through Bill 7, An Act to reduce bureaucracy, improve the efficiency of the State and strengthen the accountability of senior officials, replaces a broader parent presence with a single parent representative. This significantly weakens the role of parents in a process that should reflect the diversity of Quebec’s education network. It also raises serious concerns for English-speaking families, whose perspective may now be absent altogether.

From the outset, EPCA has maintained that parents from the English public school system must be included in discussions and decision-making processes that affect their children and their communities. When families turn to an ombudsman, they are often already navigating difficult and stressful situations. At that stage, trust, understanding, and awareness of the community’s specific context are essential.

It is therefore difficult to accept the argument that reducing representation somehow improves efficiency. A smaller committee does not automatically mean a better process. Efficiency should never come at the expense of fairness, credibility, or informed decision-making.

What this amendment accomplishes is not meaningful simplification, but a narrowing of perspectives at a time when inclusive representation matters most. Parents deserve to be heard. Their role should be strengthened, not diminished.

EPCA believes this change sends the wrong message. When parent voices are pushed aside, confidence in the process is weakened, and the legitimacy of the appointments themselves is called into question.

This amendment is therefore not a genuine administrative simplification. What it does achieve is a narrowing of perspectives, a weakening of parent representation, and a loss of legitimacy in the appointment process.

Reducing the voice of parents is not an efficiency measure. It is a step backward.
