Meet Joanna Wu : A Dedicated Instructor at WELC!

Background and Experience
"My name is Joanna Wu, and I bring over 8 years of experience as a certified English teacher in China, where I taught at a high school in Shanghai. After completing my master’s degree at Western, I joined WELC in 2017. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to helping students excel in academic English and prepare for success at university."

Inspiration for Joining WELC
"I was inspired to become an instructor at WELC because of the variety of academic English programs it offers to meet learners' needs, as well as the respectful and supportive learning environment it provides. My favorite part of working here is not only helping international students overcome language barriers and succeed at university but also guiding them as they adapt to a new culture."

Rewarding Moments in Teaching
"It is incredibly rewarding to see students make progress in their language skills and achieve academic success by the end of each program. One of the most memorable moments in my career was when a student, who initially relied entirely on translation tools to communicate, gained confidence and skills throughout the term. By the end, they delivered a well-organized academic presentation for their final project. Witnessing this kind of progress is what inspires and motivates me as an educator."

Advice for New Students
"My advice to new students is to always seek help when needed. Sometimes, international students might feel hesitant to ask questions because of cultural differences, but seeking help is an important part of the learning process. If you encounter any difficulties, I strongly encourage you to talk to instructors or staff. Please remember, the WELC team is always here to support and assist you."

Meet Kangrui Lu, a graduate of the Boost Program and a Bachelor of Business and Management Organizational Studies (BMOS) student at Western University!

“My experience at WELC has been invaluable in helping me adjust to university life. The supportive and friendly environment not only allowed me to make new friends from around the world, but also helped me find my own pace in learning. Over these two months, I’ve become familiar with the campus and have gained confidence in navigating my future studies.

Everyone at WELC is wonderful. They care about the students, support our extracurricular life, and look after our physical and mental health while sharing their knowledge. Participating in the WELC program has been a precious experience. If you are new to Canada or about to start at Western University, joining this program will greatly benefit your future studies and life.”

A group of our AEP students enjoyed a fun and educational trip to Loblaws last week!

Led by their instructor, the students explored the local grocery store, applying the skills they’ve learned in class to real-life situations. They practiced note-taking, comparing and contrasting food items, and even interviewed shoppers to ask for opinions. The visit also helped them expand their food-related vocabulary and improve their research skills, making for a practical and interactive learning experience!

Today, one of our AEP cohorts had an exciting visit to Weldon Library!

The students, guided by their instructor, explored the library, answered research questions, discovered books they loved, and learned how to check them out. They also practiced their APA citing skills by writing a related essay. It was a great opportunity to build their research skills and dive into new resources!

Our Thanksgiving tree is beautifully filled with colorful leaves, each carrying a heartfelt message from our students. From family and friends to personal achievements and new experiences, the tree is a touching reflection of the gratitude within our community.
