Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories

Benjamin Shapiro’s journey through the Honours Specialization in History at Western University highlights how curiosity, dedication, and meaningful academic experiences can shape a student’s future.

Benjamin first developed a passion for history through an early fascination with the British Royal Family, particularly Princess Diana. Over time, that interest grew into a deeper exploration of world history, eventually guiding him to fully pursue an Honours Specialization in History after beginning his studies in a dual Political Science and History major.

A defining moment in his academic journey came through History 2611E: Survey of Korean History. “Dr. Carl Young’s passion was infectious and incredibly engaging,” Benjamin shares. This course helped him make connections between unfamiliar regions and broader global historical themes, reshaping how he approaches learning.

Throughout his time at Western, Benjamin also served as Assistant Editor of The Mirror, where he worked closely with peers to refine and strengthen academic writing. This experience helped him grow as a critical thinker and collaborator.

Outside the classroom, Benjamin embraced leadership and community involvement through mentoring roles, residence life, and departmental engagement opportunities. These experiences helped him build strong communication skills and lasting connections across campus.

As he graduates, Benjamin will be pursuing either a Master of Arts in History or law school in Ontario, continuing to build on his academic foundation and passion for history.
