It's Emergency Preparedness Week, and your help is needed on a related letter-writing campaign.
Environment and Climate Change Canada's long-standing radar research program has been shut down. Without it, our new $180M national radar network will not reach its full potential, and known problems will not be solved.
Weather radar is the best tool a forecaster has when issuing the severe weather warnings that keep Canadians safe, and making sure that this tool is the best it can be is essential. We at the Northern Tornadoes Project also need high-quality radar imagery to track down Canada's tornadoes. The situation has us concerned.
If you'd like to help, please follow the link below to a letter writing tool. It will send two letters - one to the federal minister in charge of ECCC, and another to your local MP. Hopefully, the severe weather community can convince ECCC to change course on this!

Some Canadian Severe Storms Laboratory news - but about a particularly intense US tornado.
The CSSL/NTP assisted the US National Weather Service (NWS) with their upgrading of the official rating of the June 2025 Enderlin, ND tornado from EF3 to EF5.
Announced by the NWS today, it’s the first EF5-rated tornado in the US since 2013.

Some exciting new work at the Northern Tornadoes Project...
Today we have a special blog post on a new NTP tool for AI-assisted satellite review, with the method described by its developer - the NTP's Daniel Butt. The tool is being used experimentally and is already producing results. More on that shortly!
