Signal flow makes a lot more sense when you can actually get your hands on it. 🎛️

Students have been learning how audio moves through the studio, from the source, through the console and out to its final destination.

These week 4 studio session takes what they’ve learned in class and puts it into practice, tracing signal paths, making connections and troubleshooting along the way.

Theory ➡️ studio ➡️ hands-on.

🎧 Headphones on for this one.

Same guitar. Three different stereo microphone techniques.

XY, ORTF or Blumlein.

Each captures the instrument and the space a little differently, and there isn’t necessarily one “right” answer. A huge part of music production is learning to hear those differences and deciding what works for the recording you’re trying to make.

So which one are you choosing?

👇 Comment XY, ORTF or Blumlein before you read everyone else’s answer.

Just because it has two waveforms doesn’t mean it’s stereo. 😬

This misconception comes up every single year.

Same signal on the left + same signal on the right = mono.

Be honest… did you know this? 🎧

White Board Wednesday!

What was the last song you listened to?

Tag the artist!

Music production doesn’t stop at the studio door. 🎛️

The same signal flow fundamentals you use to record a band in the studio show up again when that band steps onto a stage.

Microphones, preamps, routing, monitors, outputs. The gear and environment might change, but understanding where the signal is coming from, where it needs to go, and how to troubleshoot it is a skill that follows you everywhere in audio.

And careers can cross those lines too. One day you might be engineering a band’s record. Another day you might be behind the monitor console on tour helping that same band sound the way they know they should.

That’s why we start with the fundamentals.

Learn the signal. Then learn where it can take you. 🎧

Before you can move fast around a studio, you need to understand where the signal is actually going. 🎛️

Today in Music Production, students worked through signal flow on the Mackie 1604, a console that a lot of audio engineers have crossed paths with at some point in their careers.

It’s a great place to build the fundamentals: inputs, routing, gain structure, auxes, buses, and how everything connects from one stage to the next.

Start with the fundamentals. Understand the signal path. Then move up.

Tomorrow: the Audient. 👀

Mic placement matters whether you’re recording a vocalist, an instrument, or replacing dialogue for a film. 🎙️

In ADR, the goal isn’t just to get a clean recording. You’re trying to match the sound that was originally captured on set, which means microphone choice, polar pattern, distance, and placement all matter.

Same recording fundamentals. Different application.

One of the things we want students to see at OIART is just how many places strong audio skills can take you.

If you could record one artist, who would it be?

09/22/2026

This is where it all begins. 🎙️
Today’s lesson starts with the basics of recording and input monitoring in Pro Tools, then begins building into tracks, playlists, voices, and the workflow students will use throughout the year.
But learning the fundamentals doesn’t have to be boring.
Sometimes you record from a CD player. Sometimes you bring a student up to perform some very dramatic Katy Perry lyrics over it. 😂
The concepts start simple. Then we keep building.

It’s not always the $100,000 console that fails you. Sometimes it’s the $12 cable plugged into it. 🔧🎛️

That’s why OIART students learn the hands-on skills that come with working in audio, including how to build, repair, troubleshoot, and test their own cables.

Whether you end up in a studio, on a stage, on set, or in post, knowing how to solve the problem when something stops working is part of the job.
