Public Health in Practice (Western MPH) From Classroom Concepts to Community Impact

Last month, we were delighted to welcome a group of students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen for a visit and discussion on global public health.

During their time with us, the students met with Dr. Cheryl Currie, Director of the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program to explore how different countries approach the complex issue of addiction. The conversation highlighted the many ways substance use and addiction are addressed around the world, from prevention and education initiatives to treatment, harm reduction, policy development, and community-based supports.

These meaningful exchanges provided an opportunity to learn from one another, compare perspectives across health systems, and deepen our understanding of the cultural, social, and policy factors that influence addiction care globally.

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with these future public health leaders and look forward to continuing to build international partnerships that foster learning, collaboration, and innovative approaches to improving health outcomes worldwide.

Final Integrative Workshop complete!

Our MPH students experienced their final Integrative Workshop, led by Dr. Shannon Sibbald with support from Dr. Shane Goodwin, Steve Hun, and Gordon Thane.

Focused on the complexity of homelessness, the day brought together 12 local community experts and 3 on‑call consultants as students worked through real‑world public health challenges and the core components of an RFP.

Integrative Workshops are intense but impactful. They give students the chance to apply classroom learning, think critically, network with professionals, and truly experience the challenges of public health practice.
