Some wonderful work done by our preschoolers during afternoon play today!

A few weeks back, some of our campers decided to decorate our maple tree. As much as I loved seeing this, my immediate concern was if this was healthy for our tree, but I did not want to interupt their play. My colleges know me well, and they know how much I love our tree, and unbeknownst to me, they were waiting to follow my lead because they were also unsure if this was a good idea. I eventually turned to Google to ask if chalk is harmful to trees, and thankfully learned that it is non-toxic to them. This chalk however had glitter in it, which is not so environmentally friendly. The children, overhearing my conversation with the other educators, began to adjust their exploration accordingly, without any direction from us. Suddenly, they were all doctors, and the tree was their patient. They shifted from using the tree as their canvas, to using a lens of nurturing to explore. They asked me if the tree would die, to which I assured them it would not, because the rain and our hose would remove the glitter. They then found brushes and attempted to scrub the glitter from the bark, all while continuing their play of taking care of their tree patient. I loved how their innocent activity of art making became something that allowed them to consider the impact of their actions. The result of this experience was both beautiful, and perhaps even more meaningful, as we considered our tree.💚🌳

🌿 When the Environment Becomes the Teacher 🌿

Sometimes the simplest moments create the richest learning.

The children are exploring their natural environment by mixing water and mulch in bowls, experimenting with textures, consistency, and movement—all while singing a familiar song together. 💧🌱🎶

As I was setting up the yard for our campers this morning, I encountered a grasshopper on a water bin. As the children arrived they wanted to take a look, and our little green friend wanted to take a look right back! The grasshopper crawled down and over to one of our friends and right up her leg! We watched closely as grasshopper jumped away, crawled under a table, and then up a tree. How fascinating! 💚
