One of our Middle Schoolers hosted a seminar on the speech “Pale Blue Dot”. Hearing his reading inspired me to take a step back and look at how we got to where this incredible group is. 🌄

Quite the mining operation today!

The question for the week: what matters most, peak performance, consistency, or efficiency? 🤔

Our Middle Schoolers experimented with different formulations, optimized their mixes for parameters, and personalized their fuselages. 🧪

They hosted the entire school to an epic launch. 🚀

Ignite counted and measured for us! 📏

Our Middle Schoolers discovered a portal hidden inside Frankenstein in the library! 📚

It swept them away to a 19th-century villa, where a mystery awaited—and with it, the secrets of writing within. ✍️

The big question: Do stories begin within us, and the challenge is to make sense of them in the world? Or do stories begin in the world, and the challenge is to make sense of them within? 🤔

Our youngest learners proudly shared their stories with our families.

Lots of giggles in the front row over a character who kept tripping over his feet, a wizard dentist, and a king turned to gold! 🧙‍♂️🦷

Full disclosure: the character that kept loosing his keys was definitely inspired by me… 🔑

The whole thing reminded me of an essential practice we all do as parents: hear their stories, and from them, help them understand how they see themselves and the world.

“Listening to children’s stories is how we discover who they are.”

While educators everywhere are wrestling with what to do with AI in the classroom, our Middle Schoolers are laying out a more detailed AI Code of Conduct.

They are seeing AI for what it is: a new tool with real potential, limitations, powers, unknowns, and implications.

The thing is, going back to just paper-and-pen, embracing AI entirely, or a top-down only approach all miss the point. Navigating this world means evaluating, using, and governing the new.

The discussion has been fascinating to hear. Some highlights so far:
— “We must consider what it takes from us, not just what it gives us.”
—“It is designed to mirror you and what you ask. How you ask a question is important and so is knowing this.”
—“Always ask for its sources.”
—“To start, we need to think about what we are doing, and what the purpose of it is.”

It is far too easy to get lost in the procedures and objectives of “repeat after me” math. It isn’t that they aren’t important— they are a bedrock our learners dedicate daily time to. The thing is, math isn’t just that. It is:
🔩 turning patterns into tools
🧰 using your toolbox to solve problems

Check out some of the math are learners are currently doing:
🏛️ Architecture
🅿️ Parking lot pricing
🥗 Lunch tray designs
📈 Predicting the pace of inventions
💳 School currency credit scores

“The essence of independence is to be able to do something for one’s self.”

Passion Projects put this on full display— they set a vision, and from it, determine the work that will get them there.

A Middle Schooler has the vision to automate morning English and Math tracking in his class, and to get an internship at an AI company.

Here is his 3-week plan:
✅ Introduction to CS Python Course
✅ Machine Learning Course
✅ Automating the Boring Stuff book study
