Today, Huron marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This day honours the histories and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples, recognizing the enduring impacts of the residential school system and commemorating the children who never returned home, as well as survivors, their families, and communities.

Truth and reconciliation urges us not only to remember, but to listen, learn, reflect, and act. Today and every day, we remain committed to creating space for meaningful dialogue, deepening our knowledge of Indigenous communities, and continuing the work of reconciliation.

At Huron, we observe a non-instructional day to provide our community with an opportunity to reflect on Canada's colonial history, learn from Indigenous voices and teachings, and reaffirm our shared responsibilities in advancing reconciliation.

We invite the Huron community to engage with opportunities for learning and reflection. Learn more about Huron's events and initiatives marking this day through the link in our bio.

We acknowledge that Huron University College is situated on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Attawandaron, and Lūnaapéewak peoples, whose sharing and stewardship of the land have been governed by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum. Myrna, an Elder from Walpole Island First Nation Bkejwanong Territory, has been a part of the Huron community through events and gatherings. Myrna shares her cultural knowledge of many Indigenous communities, inviting introspection about how our responsibilities shape relationships.

This September, Myrna will return to campus to lead our opening ceremony in addition to many other events, as Huron comes together to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day of learning, remembrance, and reflection.

In the photo, Myrna stands beside Huron’s Indigenous Initiatives Logo, a visual identity rich in cultural significance and transformation. The artwork features braided sweetgrass, representing kindness and honesty; the Tree of Life, symbolizing reconciliation and growth; and the Amik (beavers), representing caretakers of community and reflecting Huron’s enduring connection to the land.

Myrna’s teachings and the symbolism of the logo ignite the opportunity to reflect about reconciliation in practice, whilst encouraging learning and building strong connections with cultural roots.

At Huron’s President’s SPARK Speaker Series, the Honourable Erin O’Toole challenged students to step outside their social media algorithms, engage with perspectives different from their own, and resist cynicism by taking an active role in their communities.

From the impact of social media on public discourse to courage, leadership, AI, and Canada’s future, the conversation explored some of the challenges the next generation of leaders will be called on to navigate.

Last night at the President’s SPARK Speaker Series, the Honourable Erin O’Toole joined us for The Health of Democracy.

At a time of growing polarization and declining trust, O’Toole offered an optimistic challenge to reject cynicism and take an active role in shaping Canada’s future.

Drawing on his experience in the Canadian Armed Forces, law, public service, and business, he encouraged the audience to follow three principles:

- Hear the other side
- Seize the day
- Dare greatly

“Active citizenship is at the core of being a leader with heart,” O’Toole said. “Strive to have success for yourself and contribute to the success of the community you are part of.”
