A record year for research at the Faculty of Law, Western University.
In 2025โ€“26, our researchers secured more than $1.6 million in external research funding - supporting work on some of the most important legal questions of our time.

Our faculty are examining how technology is being used to facilitate gender-based violence in conflict; the foundations of international criminal law; how appellate courts make decisions; and pressing questions involving law and language, policing, equality and human rights.

The funding includes major awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and Horizon Europe.

The breadth of this work is particularly exciting. There is no single model of research excellence at Western Law. Our scholars are doing ambitious doctrinal, theoretical, empirical and interdisciplinary work, tackling questions that matter to law, policy and society.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be highlighting these projects and the professors behind them.

Congratulations to all of our colleagues whose work contributed to an exceptional year for research at Western Law.

Western Law's Community Legal Services is moving to downtown London. ๐Ÿข

This December, our free legal clinic relocates to the 5th floor of Fanshawe College's Howard W. Rundle Building at 137 Dundas St, which is only steps from the London courthouse.

President Alan Shepard and Fanshawe President Peter Devlin signed the lease today, marking a major step toward reducing barriers to justice for London and Middlesex County residents. For over 50 years, CLS has trained generations of Western Law students while providing free legal help. Last year alone, students handled 600+ cases and consultations.

Western Law Dean Mohamed Khimji says it best: this move builds on "the enduring legacy of Community Legal Services" in expanding access to justice for our community's most vulnerable residents.

On June 5, 2026, Western Law hosted a workshop on a draft book manuscript written by Professor Zoรซ Sinel (Western Law). The book is titled Just Feelings: A Tort Law Theory of Emotion.

The workshop was organized by Professors Joanna Langille and Jason Neyers, and featured comments on Professor Sinelโ€™s book from leading private law scholars, including Professors Robert Stevens (Oxford), Nicolas Cornell (Michigan), Christopher Essert (Toronto), Jennifer Nadler (Osgoode), Stephen Bero (SFU), and Erika Chamberlain (Western).

Professor Sinelโ€™s book examines what several key human emotions โ€” fear, distress, spite, grief, love, pain, and regret โ€” mean in tort law. Its central argument is that, for emotions to form the bases of tort law's rights, obligations, and remedies, they must be understood from the perspective of tort law itself. This is a perspective that must eschew a conception of emotions as mere feelings and insist on an understanding that preserves the parties' juridical equality. In its offering of a strictly juridical account of emotions, the book challenges some contemporary neuroscientific theories of emotions as well as recent social shifts in our treatment and responses to the emotional states of others.

The scholarship of several members of Western's Tort Law Research Group (TLRG) has influenced the Supreme Court of Canada's landmark decision in Ahluwalia v Ahluwalia, 2026 SCC 16. The decision, which recognized a new tort of intimate partner violence, cited articles and book chapters by Professors Andrew Botterell, Stephen Pitel, and the late Gerald Fridman.

It also referred to two books co-written by TLRG members and co-edited by Pitel and Professor Erika Chamberlain: Fridman's The Law of Torts in Canada and Introduction to the Canadian Law of Torts. In addition, the majority decision cited a family law casebook co-authored by Professor Claire Houston and a collection co-edited by Professor Melanie Randall.

It's a historic decision that draws extensively on academic scholarship. The court cited more authors from Western Law than from any other law school.

TLRG members are publishing three case comments on the ruling in a special issue of the Canadian Cases on the Law of Torts (CCTLs):
"When the Facts Cry out for a Remedy: Ahluwalia's Framework for Recognizing New Torts" by Erika Chamberlain
"The New Tort of Intimate Partner Violence: Definitional Difficulties" by Stephen Pitel and Melanie Randall
"Everything Old is New Again: Corrective Justice and Rights in Ahluwalia v Ahluwalia" by Andrew Botterell, Jason Neyers, and Zoรซ Sinel

The special issue of the CCLTs, which will also include the full bilingual text of Ahluwalia v Ahluwalia, will be released in mid-summer and will be accessible in a bound volume and on Westlaw.

Congratulations to Professor Emeritus Thomas Telfer on the publication of his new book, Debt and Federalism Vol. 2: Provincial Efforts to Protect Insolvent Debtors in Canada, 1939โ€“1960 (CanLII Authors Program, 2026), co-authored with Virginia Torrie.

This book is the second volume to Debt and Federalism: Landmark Cases in Canadian Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law, 1894โ€“1937, published in 2021. Volume 2 builds on the themes developed in the earlier work and extends its analysis through a focused examination of five landmark cases where provincial debt legislation came into conflict with the federal bankruptcy and insolvency power.

Please join the Western Law community on congratulating Dr. Carol Dyck on the successful defense of her PhD thesis! ๐ŸŽ‰ Carol's research asks a timely and important question: how can we protect the Arctic Ocean and its unique ecosystems as our climate continues to change?

Her work explores how international governing bodies can come together to ensure the Central Arctic Ocean receives the long-term, comprehensive protection it deserves before irreparable damage is done. Her research is a reminder that protecting our planet's most fragile spaces requires not just urgency, but cooperation across borders and institutions.

Congratulations on this incredible milestone, Dr. Dyck!
