Since 1987, Melchers Construction Limited has built homes, neighbourhoods and business spaces from its headquarters in Komoka. The company started out doing home renovations and now runs as a full-service design/build firm, creating communities like Timberwalk in Ilderton, Kilworth Heights and EdgeWater Estates in the Municipality of Middlesex Centre.

With Middlesex County's population projected to reach 151,500 by 2056, local builders like Melchers are helping shape the county’s future.

We’re closing out our Ontario Agriculture Week series with the last two stops on the Middlesex Agri-Business Tour:

❄️ At Nortera in Strathroy, we stepped inside the freezer to see where Ontario-grown vegetables go after harvest. Nortera works with 575 agricultural partners and processes more than 400,000 tons of frozen and canned vegetables a year across 11 plants in North America, and one of them is in Middlesex County.

🐄 At Stanton Farms in Ilderton, a family dairy operation dating back to 1951 now milks 1,000 Holsteins and sells genetics, including semen, embryos, and breeder bulls, to other dairy producers. It also makes energy. The farm’s anaerobic digesters capture methane from manure and organic waste and turn it into renewable natural gas, making Stanton Ontario’s first agriculture-based RNG supplier.

Six stops, one sector, and a wide range of jobs and investment across Middlesex County. Thank you to the Middlesex Federation of Agriculture for sponsoring the tour and to every host who opened their doors.

Ontario Agriculture Week continues, and so does our look back at the varied stops on last week's Middlesex Agri-Business Tour.

So far we've highlighted a large scale greenhouse and a family homestead. Today it's the shop floor in Strathroy, where two manufacturers work across the road from each other.

Wolfe Heavy Equipment designs and builds plows and wheel trenchers engineered to hold grade in tough ground conditions, and manufactures and stocks its own critical parts, shipping most the same day.

Parmerit designs and builds custom automated equipment, along with precision machining and fabrication, with CWB certified welders on site and a lifting capacity of 20,000 lbs.

Not every agriculture job is on a farm. These are skilled trades, engineering, and manufacturing careers in Middlesex County and it was amazing to see inside these two factories last week.

Yesterday we kicked off Ontario Agriculture Week at Ontario Plants in Glencoe. Today, we travel from large-scale growing to a family farm homestead. 🌾

The second stop on our Middlesex Agri-Business Tour last week was Jireh Hills Family Homestead, where one farm supports several lines of business:

🐐 A farm school
🧼 Goat milk soap made on site
🛏️ Overnight cabins for a full farm stay
🧀 A new Signature Experience, developed with Ontario's Southwest Regional Tourism Organization, where guests milk the goats and make their own cheese.

It's a clear example of how a small farm can diversify into education, products, and agri-tourism, and part of why agriculture is the leading sector in Middlesex County's economy.

One day, one county, and a full picture of what agri-business means in Middlesex County.

Agriculture is Middlesex County's leading economic sector, and it reaches well beyond the farm gate. It includes the manufacturers building the equipment, the companies engineering the facilities, and the producers advancing genetics and growing practices. Each stop showed a different link in that chain, and the jobs and investment tied to it.
