Today we recognize Orange Shirt Day, also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours the Survivors of residential schools, remembers the children who never returned home, and recognizes the lasting impact that residential schools have had on Indigenous families and communities across Canada.
Orange Shirt Day began with the story of Phyllis Webstad, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school. Her story reminds us that every child matters.
By wearing orange today, we show our commitment to learning about the truth of Canada's history, listening to Indigenous voices, and helping to build a future based on respect, understanding, and reconciliation.
As you move through your day, take a moment to think about how you can show kindness, empathy, and respect to others.
