October 5th is World Teachers’ Day, and I want to take a moment, on behalf of the Local, to recognize the extraordinary work you do every day in classrooms and school communities across the Local.

On behalf of the Thames Valley Teacher Local, thank you for the work you do and for the difference you make. Today, we celebrate you, the profession you have chosen, and the lasting impact you are having on the lives of students across Thames Valley.

Building on the work we began last year on collaboration, relationships, and trust, this session will continue to strengthen the partnership between Principals and Workplace Stewards and highlight the important role that relationships play in creating a positive school culture.

As educators, September 30 is more than a date on the calendar. It is a reminder of our responsibility to learn, reflect, and teach with intention. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation asks us to honour the children who never returned home, survivors of residential schools, their families and communities, and to recognize the ongoing impacts of these injustices.

In our classrooms, we have an important role in reconciliation. We can create spaces where truth is spoken, difficult histories are not avoided, Indigenous voices and perspectives are valued, and students develop greater understanding, empathy and respect.

Wearing orange is an important act of remembrance and solidarity, but our responsibility extends beyond September 30. Reconciliation requires continued listening, learning and action throughout the year.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, honours Residential School Survivors, those who never returned home, and the families and communities that continue to be impacted by the Residential School system.

Wearing orange recognizes and affirms that , while encouraging meaningful conversations, learning, and most importantly, action.
