What a day of training today at SMAA!

First, I want to give a huge shoutout to Heteng Zhang! Heteng traveled over 3,100 km from Edmonton, Alberta, all the way to London, Ontario, to train with me in person. He is doing two 90-minute private lessons per day for three consecutive days, and today we definitely put in the work. Over the course of three hours of training, we covered Delayed Sword, Sword of Destruction, Blocking Set 1, Short Form 1, Long Form 1, Kicking Set 1, Coordination Set 1, B1a, B2a, B3a, B4a, and all 24 Green Belt Techniques. And trust me, it was hot in London, Ontario, today! Despite the heat and the intensity of the training, Heteng kept pushing and giving it his all. Traveling over 3,100 km just to train in person shows an incredible level of dedication and commitment. Heteng is the man!

Second, in the evening, I taught a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Sherbourne Martial Arts Academy. We covered two cross chokes from the kneeling position, four collar choke defenses from the kneeling position, two cross chokes from the closed guard, a counter to the cross choke from the closed guard, and the baseball bat choke from side mount to knee on belly. The class finished with three consecutive rolls.

From three hours of intense private training in the morning and afternoon to another hour of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the evening, it was a long and productive day on the mats. These are the kinds of days that remind me why I love martial arts so much.

A great night of Kenpo classes tonight at SMAA.

In the first class, Ivan Valdivia reviewed all 24 Green Belt extensions. Ivan is such an amazing Kenpo black belt, leader, and friend. Everyone in the Ottawa, Ontario region should consider seeking him out for outstanding Kenpo training!

In the second class, it was the Canada, Chile, and USA connection as Evan Wiley, Juan Castro, and Mike Klusman worked on the Kenpo extensions to Detour from Doom, Gift of Destruction, Crushing Hammer, Repeated Devastation, and Squatting Sacrifice. We then moved on and worked on the first three techniques of the Kenpo Staff Set.

It was an awesome night!

Big day of training today at SMAA!

In the morning, Lori Herrington (USA) took a private lesson and reviewed the following Kenpo self-defense techniques: Tripping Arrow, Fallen Cross, Wings of Silk, Gathering Clouds, Detour from Doom, Leap from Danger, Securing the Storm, Clipping the Storm, The Back Breaker, Circling Fans, Protecting Fans, Unfurling Crane, Entwined Lance, and Twirling Hammers.

Following Lori’s session, Matt Trejo (Canada) came in to train Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. We started with North-South submissions and escapes, including a North-South maintenance drill, two North-South escapes (Shimmy and Spin, and Choke Counter), Bread Cutter Choke, Kimura, Armbar, and North-South Choke.

We then moved into Back Mount submissions, working through a Choke Sequence (Rear Naked Choke x3 and Lapel Choke x3) and the Double Threat (Straight Armlock x3 and Choke Combination x2).

Finally, in the late afternoon, I led a group black belt class for my friends in Chile, including 6th Degree American Kenpo Black Belt Nelson Alvarez and his students. We covered a lot of the “hows” and “whys” of the kata and explored the details behind the movements.

Amazing work, everyone! What a great day of training!

At the request of many Kenpo black belts, and especially Shane Simms (St. John’s, Newfoundland), Shaun Thornhill (Sarnia, Ontario), and Ian Reid (Adelaide, South Australia), I have now filmed an analytical breakdown of Long Form 4, performed at a walk-through pace.

Please know that this only scratches the surface of the many “hows” and “whys” contained within the kata, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

Here is Part 1, covering the first five techniques of Long Form 4. Parts 2–4 will be posted throughout the coming week.

Now that was intense...

Tonight, I taught a two-hour international online Black Belt class. We covered the base and extension of the Kenpo self-defense techniques Spiraling Twig, Cross of Destruction, and Flight to Freedom.

We also explored the relationships between Spiraling Twig and Wings of Silk, Cross of Destruction with Fallen Cross and Thrusting Salute, and Flight to Freedom with Locked Wing. I also demonstrated a change-up from Spiraling Twig into Crossing Talon.

From there, we worked through the first half of the Kenpo Staff Set, as well as the following Green/Purple freestyle techniques: B5a, B5b, B5aP, B5bP, B5aPbk, B5aPhk, B5aPbkhk, and B5aPhkbk.

With Black Belts joining from Canada, Chile, and the USA, we had an incredibly dedicated, enthusiastic, and eager group committed to expanding their knowledge, refining their skills, and continuing their growth.

An awesome class with an outstanding group of martial artists. What a great night!
