Taking a quiet Sunday walk and feeling very grateful. After more than 20 years in education, I can honestly say I love what I do.

At Darshani Dyslexia London, I get to sit alongside learners and families and help them make sense of their strengths and challenges. I am especially passionate about making assessment culturally responsive, so that families from every background feel seen, heard and understood.

Seeing that moment of relief when someone finally has answers is the best part of my work. đź’›

For a lot of families the back-to-school season brings a particular kind of dread. The uniform laid out the night before. The stomach aches that start on Sunday. The girl who is back to holding it together again at school, and coming home and falling apart completely.

Some won't make it back through the door at all, and families will spend the next few weeks being quoted attendance percentages by people who hold the firm conviction that the problem is motivation. It isn't. It's a child who has been masking so hard for so long that her nervous system has simply said no.

If that's where you are right now, you are not imagining it, your daughter is not manipulative, and you are not failing her. The system was not built with her in mind. That's the actual problem.

September is one of our busiest periods, because families suddenly find themselves back in the fight. We're here for that. Our Facebook group has over 36,000 members who know exactly what this time of year feels like. And our online school, The Haven , supports young people who can't be in a mainstream environment. Re-engagement is possible. We've seen it happen for girls who hadn't left their bedrooms in months, who had given up on the idea of learning entirely. The beginning of their recovery didn't look like a school gate. It looked like a chat with someone who got it, camera off, no pressure, no attendance register.

If you're navigating this right now, come and find us.
