As snow accumulates and drifts around our homes, please take the time to clear the exhaust vents around your home.

With the recent snowfall, residents are advised to check their outside vents, and make sure they are free of any snow cover, since covered vents can force dangerous yet odorless carbon monoxide fumes back into the house.

High snow drifts can cover the vent for a heating appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, dryers, etc.

In addition to ensuring their vents are clear, we also suggesting shoveling any neighborhood hydrants as another means of assisting in providing for the safety of local residents and their families.

It takes firefighters several days after such a storm to locate and shovel out each hydrant. Searching for and shoveling out a hydrant in the event of a fire after a storm could take precious minutes and prevent firefighters from extinguishing a house fire.
