Today is Neurodiversity Pride Day, a day to honour the beauty of every neurodivergent mind. It's also a good reminder to embrace who we are, celebrate our unique strengths and stand together in pride, solidarity and self-acceptance FOR ALL KINDS OF MINDS.

This week is National AccessAbility Week, a time to remove barriers to create a fair and welcoming society for everyone.

Many of us think of accessibility as having physical access to a space (which is important!), but it goes even deeper than that. There are a lot of disabilities that are invisible. These hidden disabilities are just as real and just as deserving of accessibility.

True accessibility means creating spaces where everyone navigating challenges can be included and given the opportunity to thrive.

Accessibility isn't a feature. It's a foundation. This week and every week, let's commit to removing barriers we can see and the ones we can't.

Something you might not know about neurodivergence is that it rarely occurs in isolation.

For example, about half of all people diagnosed with ADHD also show traits of dyslexia or dyspraxia. There is a high correlation between ADHD and autism. Many neurodivergent individuals navigate multiple neurotypes simultaneously.

This means challenges associated with neurodivergence are often layered. A child might struggle with executive function from ADHD while also processing sensory input differently due to autism. They might have motor planning difficulties from dyspraxia while also managing anxiety. The support they need is just as complex as their neurodivergence.

It also means that strengths can compound. The hyperfocus of ADHD, combined with the attention to detail of autism, can create incredible focus. The creative thinking associated with dyslexia, paired with ADHD intensity, can spark innovation.

When we support neurodivergent individuals, we need to see the whole picture. One label rarely tells the complete story.

Understanding the intersection of their neurodivergence helps us offer support that actually works. Neurodivergent brains are beautifully complex. So is the support they deserve.

Tom Holland, the actor behind the most recent Spider-Man, has spoken openly about how his dyslexia and ADHD actually help him in his work. The hyperfocus and high energy that come with ADHD fuel his intense physical performances and dedication to his craft. His dyslexia taught him alternative ways to learn and memorize scripts.

What might be seen as limitations became part of his unique approach to acting. He didn't succeed despite being neurodivergent. It's the fact that his brain is different that makes him the unique artist that he is today.

His story is a good reminder that neurodivergent kiddos can achieve incredible things when they're supported, when they find their passion and when they're allowed to work with their brains rather than against them.

ADHD and dyslexia don't define limits. They're just different ways of thinking, learning and experiencing the world. And sometimes those differences become superpowers.

Hey Bridges families! We wanted to send a reminder that popcorn orders are due this Friday, May 22, 2026 (that's tomorrow!)

This year, all funds raised by each kiddo will go directly toward their activity fees to help offset the higher daily activity fee for our summer program and the special experiences it offers.

By the way... if you (or your business) would like to sponsor or support a family or field trip, please call our office at (587) 425-4211. We would be happy to arrange this.

When we create truly inclusive spaces for neurodivergent individuals, everyone benefits. Classrooms become more flexible and responsive. Workplaces tap into diverse thinking styles and problem-solving approaches. Communities grow richer with different perspectives and ways of being.

Inclusion isn't about checking boxes or being nice. It's about recognizing that neurodivergent minds bring strengths our world desperately needs, like innovative thinking, attention to detail, passionate focus and authentic perspectives.

When we remove barriers and make room for all kinds of brains, we don't just help neurodivergent people thrive. We unlock potential that moves all of us forward.

Inclusion isn't charity. It's how we grow.

Our mental well-being is shaped by how our brains work and by the community around us. For neurodivergent youth, this community can be a major difference-maker. Feeling safe, understood, and accepted can make mental health challenges easier to prevent and manage.

Support doesn't need to be complicated. It can be as simple as listening without rushing to fix things, offering flexibility when something feels overwhelming or making space for someone to express themselves in their own way. These small moments build trust, help reduce stress and make it possible to see that things could be just a bit easier.

When neurodivergent youth feel genuinely seen and accepted, resilience grows. Communities that choose inclusion and understanding create environments where young people are not only supported but valued for who they are.

May 4-10 is Mental Health Awareness Week in Canada, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health conditions and reducing the stigma associated with them. This observance is especially important for neurodiverse individuals, who tend to experience mental health issues at higher rates than those who are neurotypical.

This year's theme, Come Together, Canada, calls on all of us to strengthen belonging, reduce isolation, and support well-being across our country. It is also an opportunity to amplify neurodiverse voices in conversations about mental well-being and to advocate for systems that genuinely support the full spectrum of human minds.

As Autism Awareness Month draws to a close, the real work of allyship continues.
Being an autism ally isn't about an annual awareness campaign. It's about showing up in everyday moments with understanding and action.

It means believing someone when they tell you what they need. It means creating spaces where stimming is welcome and masking isn't necessary. It means challenging assumptions about what being on the spectrum looks like and advocating for accommodations without being asked. It means listening to the voices of those on the spectrum, not just parents or professionals but "actually autistic" individuals sharing their lived experiences. It means recognizing that autism isn't something to fix but a different way of being in the world that deserves respect and celebration.

It means speaking up when you witness discrimination, educating others when they get it wrong and making room at the table for neurodivergent perspectives. Allyship isn't a month. It's a commitment that lasts all year, every year.

April may be ending, but our work as allies is ongoing.
