A lot of people think our Sun will explode one day… it won’t.
It’s simply too small to become a supernova. That fate is reserved for massive stars like Betelgeuse — not our relatively modest star.
Right now, the Sun is powered by nuclear fusion in its core, fusing hydrogen into helium. That energy moves outward through radiation and convection, maintaining the balance between gravity pulling inward and fusion pressure pushing outward. As the hydrogen fuel runs out, that balance breaks — and the Sun begins to expand into a red giant.
It will then shed its outer layers, forming a glowing planetary nebula, leaving behind the core — a dense white dwarf.
And that’s the final state of our cutie patootie Sun: no explosion… just a slow cooling over billions (even trillions) of years.
