When we see children as capable, competent, curious, and active participants in their own learning, it changes the way we respond to them. It affects when we step in, when we wait, the language we use, the responsibilities we offer, and the environments we create. 🍃
Sometimes the most meaningful thing an educator can do is stay close, trust the child, and give them time to try.

What is a moment when you stepped back and saw a child show you just how capable they really were?

🌿 The best classroom doesn’t always have four walls.
Outdoor play isn’t just about getting fresh air—it’s where children build confidence, solve problems, take healthy risks, strengthen friendships, and connect with the natural world.
When children climb, dig, create, and explore, they are developing:
🍃 Gross motor skills
🧠 Critical thinking and creativity
💚 Resilience and confidence
🤝 Social and emotional skills
🌞 A lifelong appreciation for nature
Every muddy boot, scraped knee, and curious question is part of meaningful learning.
Play outside. Grow inside. 🌱

This morning our infants were exploring with recycled materials and loose scarves. They began to understand its weight, texture and quality as they challenged the material and their own unique abilities.

Brave girl,
Love who you are.
Every dangling curl.
Every grass-stained foot.
Every paint-speckled shirt.
Every wonderfully mismatched masterpiece.
Be barefoot and bold.
Wander where your wonder leads.
Pick the flower.
Ask the question.
Watch the butterfly a little longer.
Curiosity was placed in your heart for a reason.
Eat the sweets.
Make a mess.
Dance in the kitchen.
Laugh until your cheeks ache.
There will be time enough for tidy days.
For now, collect the moments that make your heart feel alive.
Because, brave girl, you are not becoming someone else.
You are uncovering the beautiful person you have always been.
And with every joyful step, every brave choice, every tiny adventure, you are growing into exactly who you were meant to be.
Oh, how beautiful it is to watch.

* These are the kinds of words that first found a home in my heart—and now they’re finding a home in my upcoming book, Brave One. A collection of letters, poems, and reflections for the brave little ones we love, it’s a reminder of the courage, wonder, and quiet strength growing inside them every day. I can’t wait to share it with you soon. 🤍📖

It's hard to see the full expression when you are holding just a seed, but having that vision is the elder's role. How far and deep are you willing to hold the vision of the child in your heart and mind's eye? The garden is the perfect place to practice this way of being. ~ Nicolette Sowder
