Casa Casa is the home for the arts in southern Alberta. It is about experimentation, incubation, learning and growing.

This page is managed by the Allied Arts Council and is intended to be a source to find information on Casa, Lethbridge's community arts centre located just east of Galt Gardens. Casa is the realization of a 20 year dream, shared by many in the Lethbridge arts community, to expand or replace the Bowman Arts Centre. This unique new facility far surpasses the original vision for expansion, and sets a new standard for interdisciplinary arts centres. Casa was built to serve a multi-generational community, with varying art skill sets and interests in all disciplines of the arts. Designing the building was a comprehensive and collaborative process led by Nyhoff Architecture from (Calgary) working in conjunction with the local architectural firm of Ferrari Westwood Babits. The Architectural team visited numerous arts education institutions and also met with members of the local arts community to define requirements for a truly functional 42,000 square foot art centre. The resulting building design is truly impressive.

🫟 Intro to Screen Printing
🗓️ Friday, October 23 & Saturday, October 24 (2 classes)

🔍 Experiment with hand-drawn designs and photosensitive materials to create screens for single-colour prints. Practice printing onto paper and fabric, creating a series of art prints and patches.

🔍 All that’s needed for this class is a listening ear and curiosity for new musical sounds! From Ireland to Africa, Latin America to Asia, this class will explore the joys of beautiful songs from around the world. Looking for something to do with your family this Thanksgiving long weekend? The Gallery at Casa is free to visit and will be open on Saturday and Sunday during our normal business hours!

Keepsakes by Seth Cardinal Dodginghorse
Growing up on the Tsuut'ina rez in my family's home, I always saw a photograph of a woman holding a baby in a moss bag. My grandmother would tell me "that baby is mom Elsie Jacobs and the woman is her mom, my granny Winnie Crowchild, these are your grannies." This photo was taken in 1921 and gifted to Winnie where it has lived in my family's home for generations. In 2014 when my family was forcibly displaced for the construction of the SW Calgary Ring Road, holding onto the memories of my family and the place we come from became very important to me. The objects in this work are keepsakes that I've found, bought, stolen, rescued, received, earned, created, and inherited in my life. Each object has a story, memory, and connection to the land, myself, and my family from Tsuut'ina, Amskapi Piikani, Kainai, Saddle Lake, and past relationships.

Darkness by Zoe Buckskin
Rooted in Blackfoot visual language and the tradition of the Story Robe, the work reflects a continued connection to the land, culture, and community. The robe becomes a personal record of experiences that cannot always be expressed through words, holding stories of loss while also acknowledging the strength that comes from carrying them forward.

The all-black surface represents the darkness that can surround periods of grief, but it also creates a space where new growth can emerge. Through this work I explores the relationship between loss and growth, recognizing that resilience does not mean leaving grief behind, but learning to carry it while remaining connected to culture, land, and community.

The Story Robe becomes both a reflection and a source of power and a way of honouring what has been lost while continuing to move forward. Through the darkness, there is still connection, memory, growth, and the strength to continue.

Artist Amy Duval is coming to Lethbridge with this beginner-friendly weekend workshop. Focusing on mold making fundamentals, practical problem-solving and material considerations, students will transform handmade clay models and found objects into reproducible ceramic forms. Participants will learn how to safely mix and handle plaster, create one part and two part molds, and use these molds to produce clay multiples.

Amy Duval, a visual artist from North Vancouver, BC, holds an MFA in Craft/Material Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University (2025), a BFA from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (2017), and a BA from the University of Victoria (2012). She has exhibited across Canada, including the Port Moody Arts Centre (BC), Yuill Family Gallery (AB), Harbourfront Centre (ON), and in the United States (VA). Duval has participated in residencies at Medalta International Artists in Residence and Harbourfront Centre. Her awards include an Emerging Artist Research Grant (2017), RISE Emerging Artist Award (2021), Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics (2023), and a Windgate Fellowship (2025).

Residual Systems by Barbara Bordalejo
Residual Systems brings together linocuts and collages that combine images with pages from dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other discarded books. The works explore how systems persist beyond their moment of use. Obsolete technologies appear alongside fragments of language and thought, bringing different systems for recording, defining, and transmitting knowledge into contact with one another. Newer works extend this investigation to the relationship between image and underlying text to consider how cultural ideas are imposed, inhabited, and contested. Across the exhibition, obsolescence is understood not as disappearance, but as transformation: the persistence of materials, meanings, and ideas after the systems that produced them have changed.

The Blue Book Shelf Project / Forests Aglow by Jean McCarthy

Blue Bookshelf Project:
The Blue Bookshelf Project is a series of original paintings inspired by the random arrangement of books.

I am drawn to the colour and visual rhythm created by these accidental compositions, and fascinated by the emotional and physical pull that physical books exert. For book-lovers like me, a row of titled spines has an almost magnetic quality.

In these paintings, I celebrate how books transform ubiquitous, mass-produced bookshelves into unique works of art.

Forests Aglow:
Join me on a walk through the woods as sunlight filters through winter branches, setting the forest aglow.

Quiet moments in nature lead me to the intersection of science and spirituality, and I find myself wondering why humans build cathedrals when nothing feels more holy than a clearing in the trees.

Here, the light dances and dazzles.

Here, my sadness lifts away in shades of mauve and amber. Hope descends as pastel light.

Here, the heavy scent of earth holds shadowy notes of slumbering gemstone hues.

This whimsical take on nature celebrates a point of view that sees colour everywhere and invites contemplation.

Every shadow is a story. Every shade is a decision to see what can only be felt.

Tangible Fragments by Kara Henry & Michelle Sylvestre
Care as an offering can transmute us. What it requires from us is tedious, tender, arduous, and any other number of adjectives that combine both exhaustion and diligence or love and frustration. The bare intimacy of the person being cared for runs up against the capacity of care givers and their community to tend to them. In that clash of needs and capacity exists a raw experience of what it means to be human. What it means to love.

Tangible Fragments as a body of work grew out of craft processes that parallel/mirror the process and profundity of care work; material qualities tracing shifts of relational transformation. Metabolized through making, different aspects of the caregiving experience became echoed in the material. Equal parts comforting and violent, the action of giving care requires both a puncturing, (a fiery transforming of cells), as much as it does a recovery, (a careful loving handling).

These processes locate care in the accumulation of small, repeated acts of attention, adjustment, persistence, and response. Art objects as traces of loving labour repeating motifs of the same; hands in caring action, bodies in need of it, identities changed in the exchange.

Nobody’s Home by Katie Wilde
Nobody’s Home depicts scenes set in a range of desolate environments, seductively apocalyptic landscapes and waterscapes where the deep sea, outer space, and floodzones merge. These surreal tableaux are populated by vacant, unfinished suburban dwellings and alien aquatic creatures. Human presence is notably absent, and the spectre of humanity is indicated only by the signs and signatures of supposed civilization.

This series explores concepts of land and home, possession versus belonging, and of relationships between nature and itself. Implied narratives offer an opportunity to contemplate how living creatures – including humans – experience timescales and relate to their own pasts, presents, and futures.

Oki and thank you for coming out to the Community Jingle Dress Project with the AAC on National Truth and Reconciliation Day! The AAC and Casa acknowledge that we are on the traditional lands of the Blackfoot Confederacy in Sikóóhkotok. We honour the Blackfoot people and their traditional ways of knowing and caring for this land, as well as all Indigenous and Metis peoples who continue to share and strengthen our community.

As a community, we created over 300 jingles to be added to the Community Jingle Dress Project created/designed/envisioned by Serene Weasel Traveller. Thank you for being part of the circle of connection and reconciliation. The jingles will continue to be added over the next month. Be sure to see the finished dress at The Gallery celebrations on Saturday, November 7th.

Thank you to Serene Weasel Traveller for inviting us to be part of this project. Thank you to Megan Gros Ventre Boy for dancing and sharing the Jingle Dance with us. Thank you to Delores BigSwallow for making delicious frybread. Thank you to the Lethbridge Weavers for providing the Lethbridge Tartan on the dress.
