THIS THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, Join us once again for POP UP, GET DOWN, the encore music festival to cap off Upside Downtown’s 2026 season!

Get ready for MORE music, MORE art, and MORE food!

The AAC is once again closing down 8th Street to make room for an Art Market, Food Trucks, Craft Stations, Community Tables – all in addition to our amazing Musical Talent!

This year we have a trio of bands that will be performing late into the evening: The Windbreakers, Hippodrome and The Boom Booms, with stage sponsor Westco Construction. Be sure to check out the community booths for Honouring Traditions and Reconciliation Society, Nectar Fine Tattooing, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Tourism Lethbridge, Lethbridge Food Bank, City of Lethbridge, and the AFA's Cruising Community Connector Shelley Kay while you're here!

5pm to 10pm
-Rotary Square, Casa | 230 8 Street S
-Cash Bar with Beau’s Birria & Taqueria, Bakari Bakehouse, La Gloria - Latin Comfort Food, Mangan (Let's Eat) by Sarsa Grill, Cookie Crimes, Macs & Custard and Pita Pit Canada - Lethbridge
*FREE to attend (dogs are also welcomed 🐶)*

The Windbreakers:
Made up of familiar local musicians, the band started writing original material after spending far too much time together during the festive season. The result? Reverb-drenched grooves, jazzy twists, surfy riffs, and enough musical chemistry to sound far more organized than they actually are.

Hippodrome:
Funk, soul, rhythm and blues, blues and even some Jazz are part and parcel of the repertoire of Lethbridge’s premier “rhythm and groove” band, Hippodrome. A rock-solid rhythm section, coupled with a dynamite horn section, all backed by a frontline of fantastic vocalists, makes this 11-piece group a truly exciting experience for any music lover!

The Boom Booms:
The Boom Booms sunny blend of folk, rock, reggae, African, and Latin music quickly connected with people on the west coast and soon they were selling out venues and playing festivals across their home province such as Squamish Live and Pemberton.

There's only 1 more week left to view the RAW exhibition at the Joan Waterfield Gallery! You can catch this exhibition during one of New West Theatre's Millennium shows this week!

RAW: Real Artists at Work
On exhibition from June 16 – September 11, 2026

This group exhibition features artworks from the Allied Arts Council’s RAW (Real Artists at Work) program. This free, drop-in program provides a creative outlet for individuals in our community who are navigating personal challenges in their lives. With guidance from artist and instructor Debbie Kelman, participants are provided space, materials and encouragement to create self-directed artwork in a safe and welcoming environment.

The RAW program is more than just making art. It’s about connection, self-expression, and providing a support system. Participants are referred to the program by support workers (often through AHS), and thanks to the Endowment Fund, they can take part without any financial barriers.

When you support the Allied Arts Council’s Endowment Fund, you’re helping to ensure programs like RAW remain accessible to those who need them most.

With summer flying by, this is your reminder that there is only 1 week left to view our current exhibitions! Currently on exhibit in our Saokitapi Gallery: Listening Through the Light – Torrie Ironstar

Artist Statement:
Listening through light reflects my experiences as a deaf nakoda artist. I experience the world through movement, colours, vibrations, institution and visual storytelling rather than sound alone. Through my artworks, light becomes a language, carrying memory, spirit, emotion, and connection. Blending indigenous worldviews with futuristic and cosmic imagery, my works explores resilience, identity and the power of seeing beyond what can be heard.

Our current exhibitions are on display until August 21, 2026. The Gallery at Casa is always FREE to visit!

Infused with elements of contemporary post-bop, Japanese fusion, and neo-soul grooves, Midnight Channel brings a sound that’s both rooted in tradition yet refreshingly modern.

Perfect for longtime jazz fans and first-time listeners alike, their live performances are an explosion of energy, soaring improvisations, and contagious joy, transforming the stage into a sacred space where audiences are held spellbound.

ORBIT:
A Curated Jazz Experience

Orbit is a space for you to experience jazz in a way you probably haven’t before. Launched by Midnight Channel, it’s a regularly occurring, curated event where jazz and jazz-adjacent music come alive. You’ll hear non-traditional approaches, improvisation, and original compositions — music that evolves in real time.

The Allied Arts Council is thankful to the Upside Downtown sponsors, listed in the comments. We wouldn't be able to do this without them!

Rain 🌧️ or Shine ☀️ the show must go on!

Tonight's Upside Downtown concert featuring Mallory Chipman and Toni Vere will be moved into the Casa Community Room, and our Community Partners Lethbridge Folk Club and Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge will be moved into the Casa Atrium.

Bad News: Unfortunately we are unable to fit food trucks through our doors so both Beau’s Birria & Taqueria and Macs & Custard are unable to be at tonight's concert.
