We welcomed Indigenous youth participating in the Alberta South Outland Youth Employment Program (OYEP) program to ULethbridge this week! OYEP is a national land-based educational and experiential summer work program designed for Indigenous high school students.

This marks the third year that this partnership between ULethbridge, The Outland Youth Employment Program and Lethbridge Polytechnic has brought Southern Alberta Indigenous youth to Lethbridge. They toured both campuses, the coulees, played traditional hand games and learned all about our programs and supports.

Faculty and alumni from the University of Lethbridge Department of Physics & Astronomy recently attended the Optica ImageSense Congress, where presentations highlighted space missions with strong connections to the University. 🚀🔬

Representing the department were Dr. David Naylor, Professor Emeritus and Conference Co-Chair, and Dr. Locke Spencer (MSc '05, PhD '09), Associate Professor and Department Chair.

Also attending were two recent alumni:

Chris Benson (BSc '18, MSc '20, PhD '24), supervised by Dr. Spencer, now a postdoctoral researcher at Cardiff University (UK), where he is developing detector technology for future space missions.

Mathew Buchan (MSc '24), supervised by Dr. Naylor, now working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on the PRIMA mission.

Congratulations to the ULethbridge researchers and alumni for contributing to the next generation of space science and instrumentation.👏

High-stakes research - University Affairs 07/15/2026

What does it take to make confident decisions when the stakes are high? 🎲 📈

In an article for University Affairs, Dr. Robert Williams (Health Sciences) highlights the critical role that the Alberta Gambling Research Institute plays in conducting rigorous, long-term research in understanding risk, behaviour and the social and economic impacts of gambling.

His work in gambling studies goes beyond theory, producing evidence-based insights that shape public policy, inform industry practices and support harm reduction at the community level.

💡 Fun fact! The institute is the world’s premier and longest standing gambling research institute, and was created in response to the introduction of video lottery terminals (VLTs) in Alberta.
