🎓 Convocation is ONE WEEK AWAY!

Graduates, here’s your checklist to get ready for Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m.

✔️ Know where to go
Visit lethpolytech.ca/convocation for your assigned assembly room. Be there 45 minutes before the ceremony.

✔️ Pick up your cap and gown
Visit the Bookstore Oct. 13 to 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Someone else can pick it up for you if you can’t make it.

✔️ Plan for parking
Parking is free on campus. Lots E and F are recommended, with entry through the Founders’ Square doors.

✔️ Give your guests a heads-up
Encourage them to arrive early. Late arrivals may not be admitted once the ceremony begins.

✔️ Pack light
Bags, coats, flowers and other personal items can’t go into the convocate seating area. Coat check is available in AN1801.

✔️ Stay for the celebration
Only water is permitted in the gym. Graduates must stay for the entire ceremony to receive their alumni gift bag.

Where Are You Wednesday! 🩺

Meet Carl Abellana, a Bachelor of Nursing – After Degree graduate and registered nurse whose career has taken him from Alberta to the United States.

Carl entered the program in 2019 as an adult learner and says the support of his classmates and instructors helped him navigate the transition and develop the knowledge and skills he carries throughout his career.

After working as a registered nurse in Calgary, Drumheller and rural northern Alberta, Carl began his nursing career in the United States in 2023. He built experience in medical cardiology, neurosurgery and stroke care before becoming an Assistant Nurse Manager at AdventHealth in Orlando, Florida. His commitment to compassionate patient care has earned him the DAISY Award, which recognizes extraordinary nursing care.

Carl is now completing his Master of Science in Nursing, focusing on patient safety and health quality. He also stays connected to the BNAD program through its Mentorship Program and by sharing his experiences with current students.

Outside of work, Carl loves to travel and has visited 40 countries. He also enjoys hiking, cycling and long-distance running, and is currently training for his second World Major Marathon in New York this November.

We’re proud to celebrate Carl’s journey and the impact he continues to make as a nurse, mentor and leader.

🎓 Meet our Fall 2026 valedictorian!

Therapeutic Recreation – Gerontology student, Sarah Watters will lead the procession of graduates and address the graduating class at our Fall 2026 Convocation on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Sarah’s path to graduation took her through the Administrative Office Professional program before she found her calling in therapeutic recreation. After encouragement from her husband to “just do something you love,” Sarah made the switch, and says each step since has confirmed that she is where she is meant to be.

Throughout her studies, Sarah balanced a full course load with about 30 hours of work each week while also volunteering in her community. Her instructors recognized her leadership, active participation and willingness to go above and beyond.

Her experiences have also shaped how she approaches life. After being diagnosed with skin cancer in 2025, Sarah described it as a wake-up call to focus on a less stressful lifestyle, spending time outdoors, walking, connecting with loved ones and doing the things she enjoys.

That perspective has strengthened her passion for therapeutic recreation and her desire to help others improve their quality of life. She has earned her Class 4 driver’s licence to drive small buses for seniors and is working toward certifications in cardio drumming and DROM, with hopes of bringing these activities to seniors in care settings.

Sarah is continuing her education at the University of Lethbridge, where she is working toward her bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation.

🧡 On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we’re recognizing a new Indigenous-led research project that is working to address misinformation about Indigenous Peoples, cultures and communities.

Working Together - Ihtsitomaniista'po'tako'p brings together the Ninastako Cultural Centre and Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Centre for Public Safety Applied Research, along with community members, Elders, knowledge keepers, educators, students and researchers.

The project will explore how misinformation and harmful stereotypes about Indigenous Peoples spread, the impacts they have on communities and how culturally relevant tools and resources can help promote greater understanding.

An important part of the project is listening to lived experiences and cultural knowledge. Community members are invited to share their experiences and perspectives through focus groups, storytelling sessions, sharing circles, interviews and online surveys.

As we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, projects like Working Together remind us of the importance of listening, learning and taking meaningful action.

huge congrats to Kylar Bloomberg, fourth-year plumbing apprentice, who brought home a Medal of Excellence from WorldSkills in Shanghai. Way to go!

We also celebrated Apprenticeship Appreciation Day with a breakfast for our apprentices, alongside some challenges and games from our STEM and Alumni teams, plus a first look at some new trades programs coming next fall.
