What are we doing to our children?

We push them to perform before they are ready, measuring their worth by achievements instead of honoring their pace. We expect them to be everything at once (e.g. academic, social, athletic, artistic), forgetting that childhood was never meant to be a competition.

What children truly need is not more pressure, but more play. They need space to wonder, freedom to connect, and time to grow into themselves without hurry.

The greatest danger to childhood is not falling behind, but being forced to outgrow it too soon. If we want children to flourish, we must protect their right to simply be children.

💙 Slow their breathing
💙 Release built-up stress
💙 Improve body awareness
💙 Build self-regulation
💙 Recover from big emotions more quickly
💙 Feel more confident managing difficult moments

Remember, the best time to practice calming strategies isn’t during a meltdown. It’s during calm, connected moments so they’re ready when big feelings show up.

This is one of those shifts in thinking that, once you truly understand it, you can’t unsee it in your own parenting. 💫

For so long, most of us were taught to respond to behavior as if it were the whole story, a child acts out, so we address the acting out. But research in child development consistently shows that behavior is almost never the actual problem, it’s the visible expression of something happening underneath, tiredness, hunger, illness, overwhelm, anxiety, a need for connection, an unmet need, or a skill the child simply hasn’t developed yet. The behavior is the signal flare, not the fire itself.

This is why two children can have the exact same outburst and need completely different responses.
👉🏼 A meltdown from exhaustion needs rest, not a consequence.
👉🏼 A meltdown from disconnection needs closeness, not a timeout.
👉🏼 A meltdown because a child lacks the skill to handle frustration yet needs teaching and patience, not punishment for something they were never taught how to do.
When we only address the behavior on the surface, we miss the actual cause, which means the same behavior tends to resurface again and again, because nothing underneath ever got resolved. ✨

This doesn’t mean every hard moment requires a long investigation before you respond. It means staying curious enough to ask, what might be going on underneath this, instead of jumping straight to how do I make this stop.

That single shift in perspective is often the difference between managing a symptom over and over, and actually helping a child heal or grow past what was driving it in the first place.

Every behavior is a symptom. Find the cause, and everything changes. 💜

We hold children to a standard of emotional perfection that we, as fully developed adults with fully developed brains, cannot even hold ourselves to.

We snap when we're overtired, we get short when we're overwhelmed, we have days where our tone isn't what we'd want it to be, and yet when a child does the exact same thing, with a brain that is still years away from full emotional regulation, we call it disrespect and reach for a consequence.

This isn't about excusing every behavior or never addressing hard moments; it’s about recognizing what's actually reasonable to expect from a developing human. A grumpy mood, a bad day, a tone that comes out sharper than intended, these are things every person experiences, including us, and treating them as character flaws in our children while excusing them in ourselves creates a standard no child could ever meet. ✨

None of us are perfect, and our children were never meant to be either. What they need isn't a parent who expects flawlessness, they need a parent who remembers what it feels like to be human, and extends that same grace inward.

We must stop holding our children to a higher standard of perfection than we can attain ourselves. 💜

This reframe is one I come back to again and again, because it changes everything about how you show up in the hardest parenting moments. 💜

When a child is screaming, refusing, hitting, melting down, or seemingly doing everything in their power to make the day more difficult, our instinct is to take it personally, to assume they know exactly what they are doing and are choosing to do it anyway, and to respond from a place of frustration and reactivity rather than understanding.

But that assumption is not just unhelpful, it is neurologically inaccurate.

A child whose behavior is escalating is not a child who has calculated how to make your life harder. They are a child whose nervous system has been flooded, whose prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for reasoning, impulse control, and emotional regulation, is temporarily offline, and who is desperately in need of a regulated adult to help them find their way back to themselves.

They cannot do it alone. The capacity for self-regulation develops slowly over years and requires consistent co-regulation to build.

💫 Research in interpersonal neurobiology and developmental psychology consistently shows that children do not develop the ability to self-regulate in isolation, they develop it through repeated experiences of being regulated alongside a calm caregiver.

Every time you stay regulated when they cannot, you are not just getting through a hard moment, you are literally building the neural pathways that will eventually allow them to do it themselves.

✨ This is why your regulation matters so much, not as a performance of patience, but as the actual mechanism through which your child's brain learns to come back from dysregulation. You are the anchor. Every single time. ✨

It is hard work, and it is sacred work, and you are doing it even when it does not feel that way. 💜

When a child keeps saying “no,” it can feel like they’re being difficult on purpose.

But often, “no” is the only word they can find when something feels too big, too fast, too scary, or too out of their control.

“No” might mean:
I need a little control.
I’m overwhelmed.
I don’t know how to start.
I’m anxious.
I need connection before cooperation.
I’m still learning where the boundaries are.

This doesn’t mean we ignore limits. Children still need clear boundaries, routines and expectations.

But the way we respond matters.

A calm adult can turn a power struggle into a teachable moment:
“I can see this is hard.”
“You have two choices.”
“We’re still leaving, and I’ll help you.”
“Take a minute, then we’ll try again.”

Sometimes the shift is simply moving from “They won’t” to “They can’t yet.”

That one thought can change the whole moment.

Because behaviour is communication, and behind the refusal there is often a child who needs help feeling safe, capable, connected and understood.
