🦢🎻 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Swan Lake, Op. 20
Swan Theme (Odette) 🎼

The ballet that is now a byword for classical music began as a failure. Tchaikovsky took the commission from the Bolshoi Theatre for a modest fee and delivered a dense, almost symphonic score, more ambitious than Russian dance usually asked for. The orchestra complained about the difficulty, the choreographer could not manage the steps, and the 1877 premiere was met with coldness. The work left the repertoire after only a few dozen performances. The composer died years later convinced it had been a mistake of his. Only two years after his death, in the staging by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, the ballet found the form that would carry it around the world, too late for him to know.
•
Listen again and notice the instrument that introduces the Swan theme: it is the oboe, a thin, slightly melancholy wind voice that sings Odette's melody alone before the strings answer. It was that design of a few notes, tied to the swan queen, that became one of the most recognizable themes ever written. And it is this same theme that music therapy carried to a former ballerina, decades after she had left the stage.
•
There is no orchestra here, no stage. What you see is the quietest effect of this music: a body that illness spared from forgetting what the mind no longer holds. Pay attention to the exact moment the oboe enters, that thin voice opening the theme: that is where the response begins, not from any outside command. No technique on display, no audience, only faithfulness to a dance once rehearsed many times over. The headphones on her ears, the wheelchair, and nothing more.

Concours de chant / Sherbrooke 🎤🎙️

01/17/2026
