One of our favourite arts is our bird! At Discovery Station we believe in a mixture of open ended art to encourage creativity and product oriented art to encourage following multi-step directions, sequencing skills, and building self esteem because they have accomplished a goal. The children love to fly their bird around, and we have even been told that past students are still enjoying playing with this art in grade 1!

Every Spring we like to do planting with the children. We work with them to plant and then watch beans grow. They get to witness firsthand the amazing work God does as he turns a seed into a plant. First we see the roots pushing down, then the stem pushing up, and the leaves coming out. We send it home with them after a few weeks and the children get to experience having food from a plant they took care of from the very start. Not only does this teach them about the life cycle of a plant, but it also helps them to develop skills of taking care of living things!

We joined in on the Olympic fun the last three weeks! We watched the events, and got to do some of them in our classroom! Our flame is being extinguished, but we are excited to keep up the ideas of encouraging one another and working hard at what we do in all of our upcoming themes

“Meeting Jesus on the Bench in My Heart” by Val Thiessen is a sweet book with fun illustrations. It’s also a great resource for teaching children how they can talk with Jesus by giving them real, concrete ideas about a concept that can be a bit tricky for young children to understand. As a bonus, this is also a book written by a Grandma of one of our previous students!

Introducing a fun game featuring colour matching and fine motor skills! The children love to play this together or individually. If they’re aren’t developmentally ready for colour matching, putting the pegs in helps them with fine motor skills and finger dexterity

The train table is a favourite here at Discovery Station! Usually it’s the first thing a new child wants to check out, and because it’s such a popular place, it’s also a good place to practice turn taking and sharing.
