Inspired by the revolutionary work of Pablo Picasso, this hands-on workshop, led by artist Adrian Golban, invites participants to explore expressive portrait sculpture through clay.

Participants will discover how artists can break traditional rules of representation by rearranging, simplifying, and exaggerating facial features to create bold and unexpected portraits. Through demonstrations and guided exercises, students will learn essential hand-building techniques while exploring key ideas from Cubism and modern art.

Rather than focusing on realism, the workshop encourages expression, composition, experimentation, and personal interpretation. Participants will be invited to see familiar subjects from new perspectives and embrace the creative possibilities of working outside traditional forms.

Designed for beginners and experienced artists alike, this workshop offers a welcoming environment to experiment with clay and take creative risks. Each participant will leave with an original sculptural portrait that celebrates individuality and imagination.

Participation Age: 18+; this workshop is especially well suited to seniors.

Discover how simple materials can become expressive sculpture. Using wire and nylon tights, participants will create dynamic abstract forms while learning the fundamentals of structure, balance, movement, and three-dimensional design.

Additional Workshop Information
This workshop offers an accessible introduction to contemporary sculpture using wire and stretchable nylon fabric. Participants begin by constructing wire armatures that act as the framework for their sculptures. Through bending, twisting, shaping, and stretching materials, students discover how line can evolve into volume and form. The transparent qualities of nylon create fascinating effects of light, tension, and movement.
Throughout the workshop, participants explore sculptural concepts such as balance, composition, positive and negative space, and abstraction. The project encourages experimentation and creative problem-solving while remaining accessible to beginners. Individual expression is emphasized, allowing each sculpture to develop its own character and visual language.
Participants leave with a finished abstract sculpture and a greater understanding of contemporary sculptural practice.

Have your kids join Ampersand Art Rentals artist Adrian Goldban for a fun, hands-on sculpture workshop in the City of Langley!

This beginner-friendly workshop introduces young artists to the exciting world of sculpture using air-dry clay. Participants will learn three essential hand-building techniques: slab construction, coiling, and pinching.

Using these techniques, kids can create miniature houses, barns, sheds, towers, castles, cartoon-inspired figures, animals, or something entirely from their own imagination. Along the way, they’ll explore how sculptors transform simple shapes into three-dimensional artworks using texture, detail, and construction techniques.

The workshop encourages experimentation, creative thinking, and problem-solving while helping participants develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. By the end of the class, each young artist will leave with a completed sculpture and new skills for creating with clay.

Participation Age: 8+

Join Ampersand Art Rentals artist Adrian Golban for a two-part sculpture class at the Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre on Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27, from 3:00–6:00 PM.

About the Class:
This two-day workshop introduces participants to the remarkable sculptural traditions of the ancient Cycladic civilization. Known for their simplified human forms and striking sense of balance, Cycladic sculptures continue to inspire artists around the world.

Participants will explore the key characteristics of this art form and translate these principles into their own clay portrait sculptures. Through guided demonstrations, students will learn hand-building techniques, proportion, surface treatment, and finishing methods, with an emphasis on how simplicity and reduction can communicate strength, emotion, and beauty.

Discussions will explore the relationship between ancient and contemporary sculpture while encouraging participants to develop their own interpretations. By the end of the workshop, each student will have strengthened their technical clay skills and completed a refined sculptural portrait inspired by ancient traditions and contemporary creativity.

This 6 classes series is designed for beginners and intermediate painters who want a solid foundation in watercolour techniques. The class starts with a live demo painting illustrating the full process, followed by hands-on painting time with one-on-one guidance.
