We say we want to be free. Fr. Harrison Ayre says we are running from it.
His question is simple. Why do the sacraments not always seem to work? The answer is uncomfortable. The problem is rarely God. It is that we would rather worship ourselves. Real freedom was never doing whatever we want. It only exists in relationship with the One it comes from, which is why a life turned in on itself ends up less free, not more.

You find out who you really are in your worst moment, not your best one.
That is the unsettling idea Fr David Bellusci, OP explores through the fiction of Flannery OConnor and the philosophy of Jacques Maritain. The extreme scene, the moment everything breaks open, is where a person gets stripped down to what they actually are. And it leaves us holding the oldest question there is: what is a human being, really?
