Only 3,800 people speak Notsi.

For some, that raised the question: Is it worth translating the New Testament for a language community that small?

This article answers with a quiet but powerful yes.

The Notsi people of Papua New Guinea already had access to Scripture in English and Tok Pisin. But access is not the same as understanding. And understanding is not the same as hearing God’s Word in the language that carries your family, your prayers, your stories, and your identity.

Many language communities have been told, directly or indirectly, that their language is not a “real” language or that their culture does not matter.

Bible translation says something different.

It says every language community has dignity. Every mother tongue matters. And every person should have the opportunity to encounter Scripture in words that are accurate, clear, natural, and truly understood.

This is why Bible translation is still needed today.

At CanIL, we help train linguists, translators, literacy specialists, and consultants to serve language communities with skill, humility, and respect.

Today we’re at OCHEC (Ontario Christian Home Educators’ Connection) at Redeemer University, meeting students and inviting them into something bigger.

Before Scripture reaches a community, someone has to be trained.
That conversation might start here.

Thank you for praying with us today.

Most people will never see the part of Bible translation that happens before the field.

Before Scripture reaches a village, before literacy materials are developed, before a translator begins the careful work of making God’s Word accurate, clear, and natural in another language, someone has to be trained.

That is part of what we do at CanIL.

We prepare students with the linguistic, cultural, biblical, and practical training needed to serve languages and communities with great care.

This work matters because language matters. People should be able to encounter Scripture in words they can truly understand.

At CanIL, we help form the people who will go on to do that work around the world.

What part of Bible translation have you never thought about before?

Each summer, CanIL becomes a place of focused, practical training for those engaged in language work around the world.

Our Summer 2026 workshops bring together linguists, translators, and media practitioners to develop skills that directly support Scripture engagement and language development.

From producing dramatized Scripture audio to creating video content to strengthening linguistic analysis, these workshops are designed for real-world application.

If you or someone you know is working in language or translation, this may be a valuable opportunity to step back, focus, and grow.

Training for Bible translation is not only about skills.

It is about forming people who can live well in community, serve with humility, and remain faithful over time.

At CanIL, formation is not an add-on. It is foundational.

Last June, at CanIL’s 40th Anniversary Dinner, Johnstone Ndunde, Executive Director of SIL Global, reminded us why this depth of preparation matters for the future of Bible translation:

“CanIL is God’s gift to the world, a true gem that has significantly impacted individuals, families, communities, and societies.”

Formation takes time. Students training for Bible translation, linguistics, and literacy are shaped over years, not semesters, and that kind of formation needs steady support.

As we approach our fiscal year-end (April 30), we are inviting 40 people to become Training Partners, partnering at $40 a month to help ensure students can begin and complete their training without unnecessary delays.

Monthly partnership allows us to plan with wisdom, support students consistently, and steward resources responsibly over time.

If you believe in this work and are looking for a meaningful way to walk alongside it over time, this invitation may be for you.
