The way you relate to yourself has a powerful impact on the way you relate to everyone else.

When you begin to understand your own patterns, triggers, and pain with more compassion, you often become less reactive, more curious, and more empathetic toward the people around you.

That can change the way you show up in your marriage, your family, your friendships, and even at work.

Personal growth is never only personal.

When you change, your relationships often begin to change with you.

Several decades ago—back when fax machines felt cutting-edge—Teresa and I owned a music production company creating radio and television content. We were confident in our product. But knowing you have something valuable and knowing how to talk about it in a way people can actually receive are two very different things.

So we went looking for a sales training program—something practical, proven, and effective.

That search led us to High Probability Selling by Jacques Werth.

What I didn’t realize at the time was that this book—and the method behind it—wasn’t really about selling at all. It was about being genuinely curious. About keeping the focus on the other person. About resisting the subtle pull to make every conversation about yourself.

In other words, I thought I was investing in sales.
What I actually stumbled into was a lesson in listening.

One of the most hopeful things about the human brain is that it can change.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to form new connections and adapt throughout life. That means the ways we respond, connect, receive love, express emotion, and relate to others are not necessarily fixed forever.

For Sidney, through the help of a LifeApp 3 Day retreat, that change has looked like becoming more open to affection, more emotionally present, and more able to connect with the people he loves.

And perhaps that is the most powerful reminder of all: growth does not have an expiration date.

Whether you are 30, 50, or in your 70s, meaningful change is still possible. The brain can learn new patterns, relationships can deepen, and parts of ourselves that once felt unreachable can begin to open.

If you’re ready to help your brain build new patterns too, join us for a LifeApp 3 Day retreat.

We can bury experiences from our past so deeply that we convince ourselves they no longer affect us.

But unresolved hurt has a way of showing up—in defensiveness, anger, withdrawal, overreactions, or the way we respond to the people closest to us.

For Junior, the 3 Day helped uncover how old feelings of rejection were still shaping the way he interacted with his wife, his children, and others around him.

The past may be behind us, but that doesn’t always mean it’s finished with us.

When we begin to understand what’s underneath our reactions, we can stop responding from old wounds and start showing up differently in the relationships that matter most.

When Teresa went back to university for her master’s in social work, her brave leap into university after more than thirty-five years somehow shone a spotlight on all the dusty corners of my own stuck places.

That's the thing about growth (someone else and your own): it doesn’t ask permission. It shows up uninvited, disrupts routines, and forces us to notice things we’d rather ignore.

And yet—if we let it—growth also opens a window. Fresh air comes in. And we realize someone else’s becoming doesn’t diminish us; it stretches us, if we’ll let it.

I wrote more about this and why someone else's growth can feel so unsettling. Catch the rest of this article on our blog:

Trauma doesn’t only live in our thoughts. It can also show up in the body—in tension, stress responses, emotional reactions, and patterns we may not fully understand.

Mariola’s experience at the 3 Day reminded her that healing can involve more than talking about what happened.

Experiential, body-based processes can help people connect with what they’re carrying in a different way and begin to release some of what has felt stuck.

As she shared:

“What I’ve experienced here is that trauma cannot only be treated cognitively but also physically… and going through the physical process here of releasing that was powerful.”

Sometimes insight opens the door. Experience helps us walk through it.

If you're ready to confront trauma with hands-on exercises and processes, consider joining one of our 3 Day retreats.

Sometimes the patterns that create the most tension in our relationships are the ones we don’t realise we’re repeating.

The need to be right. To defend our point. To win the argument. To make sure the other person understands why we are correct.

But being right and being connected are not always the same thing.

One of the most powerful parts of growth is becoming aware of the self-defeating patterns we bring into our relationships—and then choosing to respond differently.

Because healthier relationships are not built on winning. They are built on awareness, humility, curiosity, and the willingness to change.
