𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 - 𝟐𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

The RSPBA was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Honorary Life Member Wilson Young on 24th August 2026.

Wilson was a drummer with the Red Hackle Pipe Band in the 1960s and 1970s. He also became World Solo Drumming Champion in 1967. In 1975 he became a drumming adjudicator, and was also one of the first ensemble adjudicators with a drumming background. He served as Vice Chair of the Adjudicators Panel and as a member of the Music Board where he was carried out a number of roles. Wilson retired after almost 40 years as an Adjudicator. Following his retirement he was made an Honorary Life Member.

Our thoughts are with Wilson's family and friends at this sad time.

Dolly was a drummer.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Dolly Parton today. While the world knows her for her incredible musical talent and philanthropy, fewer may know that Dolly was once a percussionist in the Sevier County High School Band in Sevierville, Tennessee.

She never forgot where she came from or the opportunities music gave her. Over the years, she quietly supported band programs, providing instruments, equipment, and uniforms, not only for her alma mater, but also helping underfunded programs in communities where students needed that support most.

From the girl behind the drum to the global icon she became, Dolly understood the power of music to change a young person's life. Her generosity reminds us that sometimes the greatest legacy isn't found on a stage, but in the opportunities we give to the next generation.

OK, I'm going to shamelessly cash in on some bragging rights.
This picture was taken in 2014. It's the RMM Pipe Band drummers at the World Pipe Band Championships. I was coaching and teaching these drummers at the time. RMM is the youth band program of the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band organisation.
Three of these drummers are now in the 2026 grade 1 World Champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band. (You know who you are)
I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am of all of these young people. Their current success is immeasurable.
