🎶 Musicality Tip

Playing the correct notes is only the beginning.

Ask:

What does this phrase mean?

Try changing:

🎵 Dynamics
🎵 Articulation
🎵 Tone colour
🎵 Phrasing
🎵 Breath direction

Music becomes much more expressive when students learn to communicate—not simply reproduce notes.

🎯 My September Saxophone Goal (and how I'm sticking to it!)

Earlier this week, I talked about setting a specific goal for the new school year.

This month, my personal focus is on improving tone consistency in the upper register.

Here is my 3-step plan to hit it:
1️⃣ 5 minutes of long tones every practice session
2️⃣ Recording a weekly progress snippet
3️⃣ Focusing on steady breath support

Setting a clear goal makes practice feel focused instead of overwhelming.

👉 What's the #1 goal you're working on this month? Drop it in the comments below so we can keep each other accountable! 👇

🏫 Back-to-School + Back-to-Practice

School schedules are busy.

The secret to consistent music practice isn't always practicing for hours.

Try creating a simple routine:

⏱️ 10 minutes of fundamentals
🎵 10 minutes of repertoire
🎼 5 minutes of theory or sight-reading
👂 5 minutes of listening/ear training

Consistency beats occasional marathon practice sessions.

Make music part of the weekly routine.

Sunday Confidence Challenge

This week's confidence challenge:

Stand up.

Take a breath.

Play something you've been practicing.

Don't worry about perfection.

Ask yourself:

“What did I do better today than I did last week?”

Confidence isn't created by waiting until you're perfect.

Confidence grows through practice, persistence, and small victories.

FLUTE

# # # 🪈 3 Things Every Flutist Should Practice Before Playing a Solo

Don't just practice the notes.

Practice:

1️⃣ *Breath* — Can you sustain the phrase?

2️⃣ *Tone* — Does every register sound connected?

3️⃣ *Direction* — Where is the musical phrase going?

A great solo isn't just a collection of correct notes.

It's a musical sentence.

Try playing a four-bar phrase today and deliberately make the *last note feel like it belongs somewhere*.

That's the beginning of musical phrasing.

🎼 Music Theory Saturday

Music theory isn't just about memorizing symbols.

Theory helps you understand why music works.

Understanding scales, intervals, chords, rhythm, key signatures, and musical structure can help students become more confident performers.

At RVM Saxophone Academy, music theory can complement practical instrumental study—including formal RCM Music Theory preparation.

👂 Train Your Ears

Great musicians don't just read music—they listen.

Try this simple ear-training exercise:

🎵 Play one note.
👂 Listen carefully.
🎤 Hum the note.
🎷 Play it again.
👂 Compare the sounds.

This simple exercise helps students develop pitch awareness and a stronger musical ear.

Your ears are one of your most important musical tools!

🎷 Saxophone Tip: Your First Sound

New to saxophone?

Don't worry about playing complicated songs right away.

Start with three things:

1️⃣ Good posture
2️⃣ Comfortable embouchure
3️⃣ A steady, relaxed breath

A beautiful saxophone sound begins with fundamentals.

Learning correctly from the beginning can make a huge difference in confidence and progress.

🎯 Set a Musical Goal

A new school year is a great time to set a musical goal.

Instead of saying, “I want to get better at saxophone,” make your goal specific:

🎯 Play one new song
🎯 Improve your tone
🎯 Learn 5 major scales
🎯 Perform for your family
🎯 Prepare for an RCM exam
🎯 Learn your first improvisation
🎯 Improve sight-reading

Small goals create measurable progress—and measurable progress builds confidence.

What is YOUR musical goal this September?

ALL INSTRUMENTS

# # # 🎷🪈🎶 Saxophone + Flute + Clarinet Players: Here's Your 20-Minute Practice Plan

Short on time?

Try this:

*5 minutes — Tone*

Long tones, beautiful sound, controlled dynamics.

*5 minutes — Technique*

Scales, arpeggios or your current technical exercise.

*5 minutes — Ear*

Sing a phrase and play it back.

*5 minutes — Improvisation*

Use one scale, one chord or even one note.

Don't ask:

“Did I practice for two hours?”

Ask:

*“Did I improve one skill today?”*

20 focused minutes every day can change your playing.
